Big block or small block?
Okay,what do I do. I have a 289 on a 427 chassis. Big block 427 or small block 351w bored to 427. Thanks folks,appreciate the suggestions.

You will need the Big Block if you want to do 198. Do not attemp this with a sb as it will only get you to 196. Hope this helps.

If I remember....
I seem to recall my SB wacking someones BB FE motor on a chassis dyno....(sorry Turk ) at the Spring Fling.
The good news is I have the proper advance, and now my Performance Engineering 418 makes 450 lbft max at the rear wheels. More than before.....hehehehehehe
Who needs a Big Block?
I'm thinking of building a Dove block based SB with the Arao 32 valve heads, what kind of ponies would that make? And it would still hang on in the fade away corners, rather than a unwilling BB motor.....

You can't imagine anyone putting a small block in a Cobra? Well, obviously 'ol CS (no matter what we think of him now) imagined it. I think the 260 and 289 Cobras were pretty sucessful cars. The 302 is even bigger than those motors.
I vote small block. Yes, I freely admit I couldn't have afforded a BB if I wanted one. But I like the light weight, price of parts and ease of upgrade of the small block.
Cranky, are you going to count the number of BBs up at Watkins Glen? Think you might need a calculator.

Like there are FAQ sections, there should be FGA sections or Icons or acronyms too:
1) What is your budget?
2) What is your intended use?
3) What is your involvement in the build and ongoing maintenance of this engine going to be?
1)The Windsor would be cheaper.
2)Either engine can weigh the same (with substitution of aluminum parts for iron on the FE), so each could handle the same, and they both displace 427 cu inches. UNLESS, you plan on going for more displacement at some future time, then 427 is pretty much max on the Windsor.
3) You will find more people and shops that are familiar with the Windsor as far as repairs and parts go.

I agree with sizzler. Define your usage parameters and build it to that. Small or Big, it is what makes YOU happy that is most important. It is your car and you can put anything you want in it. You could really upset some people and go with something unconventional like a hemi, or big buick, or even a late model OHC engine. Just make sure it is what will fit your needs.

BB or SB?
Whatever makes you feel good--they'll both work. If you're going to do any autocrossing or track stuff--then use a SB or at least use an aluminum BB. I personally think a SB would work best for that purpose. If you're building a street car and want some flash--go BB. I'll let you know about alum BBs and autocrossing/track use in about 7 or 8 months, but I doubt my opinion will change.

I looked into the hemi thing. Iron block, they don't call it the elephant motor just for the motor mounts. Aluminum would be great, but you would have to go West Coast to get one to fit with those big heads.

A SOHC 427 is as wide as a hemi, and I have done work on a contemporary with a SOHC in it. So if one really wanted too they could put a mopar up front. Recommend against it though.
