Default 390... stroker?

I seem to remember reading about this somewhere, but can't find it again.

Q: If you start with the 390 block, what are the options for which crank(s) you could run ---- leading you to what final displacement? A 406 or a 410? Seems like this could make for a reasonable (i.e. -- not too expensive) FE street motor that could really move. (Like with some warmed over Edelbrock heads, etc.). Guess I'm just hooked on those pent-roof valve covers...

Ben:

A common scenario is using the 410 or 428 crank (3.98") to yield 410 cid. Remember you have an externally balanced crank now, so you will need the flywheel and balancer. Obviously, this is the inexpensive method

A 406 has a 4.13 bore (390 is 4.05).

Another option is Flatlander Racing. These are 416 and 430 stroker kits for the 390. The price is listed about $2000 for the 430 setup. Don't know anyone that has one.

BTW, pentroofs rule.

OK engine gurus -- so let's say you stroke a 390 to 430 -- so you'd have an FE with slightly more than 427 cu in (-- you could say you had a 427 FE!). How would it compare to a standard 427 or 428 in terms of stroke ratio, torque and horsepower band characteristics, etc.? All hypothetical for now -- as it doesn't sound like Flatlander has a lot of these out there yet...

My first impression of that much stroke is going to be gobs of torque at lower rpms and it ain't gonna buzz to 7 grand or more like a 427. To me it would be a great engine for a 4x4 Ford pickup from 1974 back. (I did one with a 410) I have a hard time seeing it as a Cobra engine with any more stroke than 3.98 (410cid)

Dear Mr. A Snake:

I must humbly disagree with the second part of your statement. My 427 side oiler was stroked to 484 by the illustrious Mr. Parham at Southern Automotive and he says the engine is good to 7000 rpm. I have seen 6500 numerous times without any problems (my MSD 7AL ignition has a 6600 rpm rev limiter chip). It's primarily a matter of proper rotational balance and adequate valve springs. However, I heartily agree with the first part; it does supply gobs of low end torque.
