Edelbrock Tunnel Port Heads??
I got my Hot Rod Magazine today (2/03) and I spied on page #92 and 93 an all aluminum 427 (Shelby block) taken out to 456 cubic inches.. Yea, nice.. It wore Aluminum Edelbrock Performer heads topped with a Tunnel Port Manifold.. Yea.. Nice.. 464 bhp through a C-6 (580 SAE est.)
The thing is.. When did Edelbrock start making Tunnel Port Heads?? These were flow tested at 325cfm / 235cfm and use 2.19 / 1.76 valves ( TP OEM were 2.25 / 195").. So they are not full TP units but they sure flow well.. The article goes on to tell how the guy is a 32 year Ford employee.. Hmmm..
Were these a special set of heads? How can this be done??
Regards,

Gotta go pickup the issue to see more about it.
Little known fact: early TPs had 2.19 intakes.

Bill-you are correct. I have seen several sets with the smaller valves. The intake is probably a Tunnel Wedge not a Tunnel Port.
I am unaware of E-brok making TP heads.

It's identified as a Tunnel Port.. Does the tunnel wedge intake use the standard 427 port configuration?

I don't know what you mean by a standard 427 port. The Tunnel Wedge was originally made for the MR rectangular ports. Different 427 heads had different port configurations. Dove made Tunnel Wedges in all of the various configurations, including the oval port ie. , TP one, which will only work with TP heads. I think there is a Dove Tunnel Wedge on the Gessford.com site.

Hi guys,
The engine in the Hot Rod article is using a tunnel wedge intake.
Although the photo is small, you can see that the intake does not have the longer center intake manifold bolt casting bosses. Also, the tunnel port has 6 intake bolts per side vs. the standard FE wedge head's 5 bolts. The Hot Rod article also dated the manifold from '64. It actually wasn't available till late '67/early '68. Typical Hot Rod B.S.
I supplied a photo of a tunnel port head vs. an Edelbrock head.
The Edelbrock head is representative of a standard FE/low/medium riser/CJ port configuration. THe TP is very different.
HTH,

I have a Dove tunnel wedge it fits the 427 low riser (Large ports) Not talking about 390 Fairlane or Cobra Jet but 427
Low riser heads have large rectangular ports. There were Canadain Super Cobra Jet heads .Factory supplied to factory sponsered cars. They always seemed to be ahead of the privatiers
Medium riser's are shorter more square than the rectangular low riser but high on the head. Large rectangular ports a little higher in head so the bend at valve wasn't so sharp.
High rise heads have a really tall narrow port.
The true tunnel port heads have tubes in ports where the push rods operate. The runners are straighter than others ,not being routed around pushrods
Next you have the SOCH which have straighter large round tunnels headed from carb to valve .With the carb off you can see the valves from the plenum.
You can see the evalution.Intakes, there are so many. In the tunnel wedge I think there at least two heights.I have the lower and hood clearance is a problem with original scoop. They make lots of scoops .If only the whole thing were planned out .I wished I had a large scoop like the Cobra spec racers now have.

Yeah, after I went to the store and looked at the article, I refused to buy it. '64 TP, indeed. More Ford stuff lately, but still Chevy oriented.
And also, the SOHC was the 3rd SO motor. It went LR, HR, SOHC, MR and TP.

I didn't get the sequence .The heads were produced for a particular purpose. They were done with the therory or knowlege of airflow and port design at that time. The story I have is the Canadian Super Cobra jet heads were supplied to only factory sponsered cars like 428 mustangs and fairlanes and were mostly a secret for the first year or two . The reason the factory cars were so much more dominate was descovered afterwards.

Hi Michael,
I think what Bill was giving was the date of production order for the 427 engines.
'63 (late) 427 low-riser, center oiler, cast crank
'64 " hi-riser, center oiler, cast crank
'65 " SOHC, side oiler, forged crank
'65 (late) " medium-riser, side oiler, forged crank
'67 " tunnel port, side oiler, forged crank
'67 " hydraulic cam, low riser, cast crank
The Canadian "SK" 428CJ heads were (are) the holy grail of all 428 heads for NHRA stock and super stock racers. They work like gang busters.
