Default I have a line on a standard bore 427 s/o with dual quads for 5k...Should I?

Ok, so I am scrounging around for a 390 to put back in my pickup after I pull the built 390 to put in my Cobra, and I cross a standard bore 427 s/o complete for 5k. The guy is selling everything he's ever owned it seems....

Anyway, it's a 68 block (will have the id's this weekend) and he was going to put it in one of his project cars, but priorities changed. He pulled it apart and took it to the machine shop where they honed the cylinders, replaced the bearings, put in a new cam an lifters, and put new rings on it, and then had the heads built. It has a dual quad manifold and carbs too. All for 5K.

Should I do it (I'd have to beg borrow and steal to do it)? What is it worth if it's truly standard bore and standard on the crank? Thoughts?

seriously, if its as clean as you say it might be ,thats a pretty fair deal.originalcarbs?, original manifold?, is it hydraulic? and what the heck happened to your other 427?

I don't yet have all the details, but should know Saturday.

Well, the my 427 is a long story.....A real pisser actually. Hopefully we'll meet this year and I'll share the wonderful story.

Brent, BUY THIS ONE (if at all possible and it checks out), 'cause you could sell either one of 'em for more than you'll have in this one, right? Except for the up-front $5k, don't see how you could lose, and it keeps the 427SO where it belongs...in the Cobra community!
Say, ya know this will cost you about $10k, after the wife is convinced...$5k for the motor, $5k for the convincing...

Brent, if this is a 68 block you can run a hydraulic or soild lifter cam, it also has the thicker cylinder walls and the top of the cylinders are notched for the big 2.25 intake valves, this is the best of the S/O blocks. Get it.......

Brent,

Ok, Brent....complete the following questionare before buying this motor....

1) What level of confidence do you have that the seller is not just hawking a previously used boat anchor?

2) If you find a comfort level with question (1) above, then ask yourself this.......

3) Do I REALLY need and have a use for this thing, or is it going to become another "garage ornament" up for discussion with your buddies while having a few beers?

4) Will your friends later say "Gee, I thought you said this was a good deal"?? ......as you empty bags of speedy dry all over the garage floor to contain the growing pool of oil after 1st time startup

5) After re-investing in several more cases of oil, you find that you just contributed to raising the commodity price of oil to $30 a barrel and all your friends are pissed off at you

6) If any of the above apply and you just can't make up your mind weather or not to spend the $5,000......remember this, "If you made it this far without it.....you probably don't need it to begin with" ...........but I do have a bridge for sale in case you're interested!!

Exceptional price, seems like the block alone would be worth that. Don't you hate it when a great deal comes up and your strapped for cash? I'd buy it even if there was NO WAY I could afford to keep it, just to be able to SELL it and make a few bucks! In the meantime, maybe I could figure out some way to keep it.

Brent,

I recommend a contingency purchase.

1) Leak down test top and bottom.
2)Compression test.....consistent across all cylinders.
3) Run out at the rear crank.
4)Hold back dollars until it runs in your car with no issues.
5) Ask for the sonic map of the block before it was built.
6) Receipts for the parts that are claimed to be inside.
7) Machine shop receipts and tolerances.

If the seller balks at any of this ...HUGE red flag.

There are probaly other suggestions others can add here. Talk to George for some recommendations. BUYER BEWARE !!!!!!

Hold it for you? I wouldn't give it back. Tony has a good point.. Unfortunatly most engine guys don't keep those kinds of records, not that the work wasn't done right, they just don't keep track of that stuff. That said really tired standard bore 427's are going for twice what you can get that one for..

I'm thinking we should starting a "get Brent a side oiler" fund.. I for one have saved about $10k picking the brains of some of the really smart people in the forum (read old farts with nothing better to do than talk about what I did 40 years ago)..

I think I have brent to thank for that for the most part.. So I'm in for $100.. If you get 49 more suckers, er contributors you get it for free..

Great idea! It's been awhile since we shipped out some dough to Brent in appreciation for all he has done for us (including put up with us)! I'm in for $100.
