Speedo reads in reverse only!
I have bought a 90 degrees angle and transmission speedo adaptor recently to install on my Doug Nash 5 speed transmission...I think that is exactly equivalent to a modern Richmond 5 speed.
That was to connect to the Smiths speedo onboard my TVR car...sorry not quiete cobra stuff but close!What was my deception finding out my speedo (the original 140 mph Smiths found on TVRs) would read in reverse gear only!
Is there a cheap solution here? Could changing a different pattern final plastic gear,the transmission one, could cure the prob.? The speedo cable turns anticlockwise when facing its extremity sat in the driver's position. Anybody knows if Autometer would have a Smiths-look-alike speedo that would fit my anticlockwise cable? Maybe the cobra reverse speedo would be a match...
Suggestions?

No.. the reverse speedo's require an adapter at the speedo..
Your 90 degree adapter is for clearance issues and shouldn't affect the way the speedo functions. It only changes the direction of the cable, not the direction of the rotation..
As for an "anti clockwise cable" Cables just turn.. It is up to the speedo (or the aforementioned adapter) to make sense of the rotation. I do not know where one can get an adapter by itself. Try someone that deals in Smiths gauges, a used one would be your best bet.

just went thru this last week when I went for a spin around the block I noticed my odometer has begun to roll back......E-mailed a tech and heres what he told me.
I have only the 90 gear adapter on the speedo ( autometer smiths knock off reverse winding 180 mph job)

The 90 degree adapter, is it dark grey with brass fittings?(AA type)Or silver-grey with black fittings? (SW type) Either way, the principle is, the threaded fitting that the cable screws on to needs to come off and pull the gear and shaft out.
Then screw the end cap directly opposite off and screw it on where the threaded fitting was.
Stick the gear and cable end fitting into the side where the end cap was.The fitting that screws on to the speedometer stays where its at.(Doesn't get changed) Good Luck.

but the adapter was on the speedo right? I think his adapter makes a 90 out of the tranny. Maybe I read it wrong.

Right the 90 degrees adaptor is the one on the transmission...I don't have anything else out of the cable end itself speedometer end. I just wonder if this 90 degree on the transm. coukdn't be responsible (adjustable just as your speedo adaptor you mentionned) for having the speedo cable turning clockwise or anti-clockwise? After all if my speedo cable would be actually turning clockwise it would be just O.K. as this is what my speedo needs!
So when I first wrote that my speedo cable turns anticlokwise when facing its end that is exactly describing what type of speedo I need: one that receive an anticlockwise impulsion from the cable...

I just went thru the same problem. I installed a 180 reverse Stewart Warner twice. The first one ran opposite direction. Apparently it was a factory defect. I also have a 90. but at the speedo end. I would suspect your speedo is the problem. If you want to check out the Stewart, lordco has them. Good Luck.

Judging from what Greenwater said I would tend to think that Michael is correct. If you have a reverse rotation speedo, you need the adapter that attaches to the back of the speedometer. Without such adapter, the cable will turn in the direction it normally would for a standard speedo- which, of course, would be the wrong direction for a reverse speedo.
