Default Billet Dipstick In a 428

I installed a Billet Specialties dipstick in my 428. I don't have the part number handy but it's what the Billet Specialties catalog called out for an FE motor. I'm also running a Canton oil pan along with an engine oil cooler (but without a remote filter). Per the ERA manual, this setup should require 8.5 quarts of oil. I installed the 8.5 quarts in a brand new engine. After priming the oil pump and running the car, I pulled the dipstick and there wasn't a drop on it. Clearly the dipstick is not reaching down into the oil. Has anyone else had this problem? Am I not running enough oil or is the dipstick just not long enough?

CJ428CJ,

Most likely your dip stick isn't long enough. I have a Mildoon 8 quart road race pan and I got the Ford chromed dip stick that is the same length as the original and it comes out exactly correct. When I had my complete system cleaned out last Winter and put on new hoses and everything I think I had to use almost 9 1/2 quarts to fill the pan, hoses, filter, and oil cooler. Try putting the dipstick down alongside the tube and see if you can get an idea of just how far it goes down.

Hi, we have all been thru this one
Simply do the math on it.
Pan capacity=? you would know
filter=? .75 liters
lines and cooler if they are the usual size and run= 1.5 liters

not showing on the stick may simply mean another liter or your stick is really off in terms of depth/length.
Have you old one to compare to??

If you can be bothered, drain the ooil now after the engine was primed and ran. see what comes out and you will know what stays in the filter cooler and lines. After an oil change.
But keep in mind what you started out with and what u will need to add for changes

Tim
