cammer heads
i heard a long time ago that Dove Performance got ahold of all the old ford FE stuff after ford pulled out of racing including the SOHC tooling. anyone know if Dove Performance still exists and if they offer cammer head repops? just an interesting little discussion i thought might fire up some research. surely the ultimate development of the 427 will not die away

I think their still in business, I bought an intake and water pump a while back. I lost their catalog but remember they did offer aluminum SOHC heads$$$$$.

I've also heard that there is a gear drive set-up to replace the old serpentine chain drive on the cammer. Anybody heard about it?
I saw one here in the Portland area, where a guy had used a cog belt drive too. He used some extended shafts on the cams, fixed the cam covers up with a seal for the shaft and it looked pretty slick.

I have not heard of a gear drive but I have seen the belt drive setup. A guy in New York was selling one on Ebay a while back.
The cam pulleys stick out like blower belt cogs. You have to also cut off the ends of the valve covers a few inches for clearance

It might be just as simple just to bolt on a set of ARAO 32 valve heads. I believe they make them to fit the 427.

Now THAT's some eye candy!
Check out the Autolite in-line carb. I wonder how many of those carbs and intakes Ford made?

ARAO heads aren't Ford.
Aren't Hemi.
Are too closely associated with BBC's for my taste.
Won't rev much over 6,000 due to the heavy valvetrain.
I should have also shown the stock Cammer's cam drive method in the series...

Not sure what I could help you with.
The gear drive was custom built.
The gilmer drive was available as a kit for a time. No more though I believe some folks in the two upper corners of the US have some stockpiled.
The chain drive cammer was at John Vermeersh's shop in Mt. Clemons Michigan (Total Performance). He would be your best source for info on cammers.
Sorry

Hey sizzler, have you ever seen that in-line carb set up in action before?
I'm curious as to how it performed. Was it one of those Ford "experimental" parts or was it a real over-the-counter performance piece?

You might want to contact this ClubCobra member, who is actually using 2 of the inline 4V's on a former, modified, 6x2 intake:
ClubCobra posting
As for whether I've seen them, no.
As I understand it, they have no idle-circuitry, and so, aren't too practical for street use. They were designed as a way around restrictions on 2x4 setups in racing and so are pretty much race-oriented. I believe they were available from Ford, for the small blocks mainly though. They came in two sizes, both of which were probably too small for their intended engines' level of performance.
The engine shown above with the inline 4V was a race piece. The block was filled and it had something like 14:1 compression if I remember right. It was being offered for sale by Ron Miller of FPP for a gentleman in New York (again, if memory serves).
They're cool as a part of history, on a day-to-day usage basis though, I think there are better setups available, then and now. As I said, they were just created as a loophole around a rule in the day.
On another subject, in this month's Popular Science, there's a pretty in-depth article about the development of the new Ford GT(40).

Autolite Inline Carb..
..was available over the counter from Ford in 1970 and 71. Two sizes, a 875 CFM (1-11/16 bore, part number D0ZX-9510-A) and a 1400 CFM (2-1/4 bore p/n D0ZX-9510-B). They really could be bought from a dealer. I know cause I sold some...
SCCA required that the carb be available to "all competitors" to be legal for Trans-Am however they never did approve it for competition in Trans-Am. Some did run it in Formula A on Boss 302s and Ford hoped it would catch on in drag racing but it didn't happen. As recently as a few years ago I tracked down some NOS carb rebuild kits for a guy in the Northwest that has one on a street Boss. And yes, they do have an idle circuit and can be street driven.
