Stupid Question ???
This may seem like a stupid question, but the two books (one by Steve Christ - Big Block Ford Engines and one by Pat Ganahl - Ford Performance) show both ways as being correct. I am putting together a 427 center oiler and am at the point of installing the timing pointer on the timing chain cover. The pointer that points to the timing marks on the crank damper. Does the flat (straight) side go toward the top of the engine or does the angled side go toward the top of the engine. I assume that one would read the timing from the flat side and it seems that common sense would tell you that that side would go up. You know what usually happens when you start to assume something, so I thought I had better ask the experts.

Paul,
I just went out and looked at mine which came from the factory and my pointer isn't quite the same as yours. Mine has a slight angle on the top and a big curve on the bottom, but the end of the pointer is on the low side or what would be the bottom of mine.

Paul:
On an FE, the crank turns counterclockwise as viewed from the cockpit. The timing pointer is viewed from the passengers side, and the long flat side should be facing down. During rotation, this brings the TDC and advance line up to that edge.
Make sense?

That would mean that the counterclockwise rotation would be if sitting in the car not standing in front looking at the engine ?

A question, not an argument. On my big block which still has the factory installed pointer the bottom side as I see it has a long sweeping curve and goes down low to a bolt that holds the bottom on. The top side is not flat but angles just a little and the pointer is at an angle \ something like at the bottom of that slash. Everything else is as you say, so maybe I am just getting the idea of a straight top confused. My bottom side is flat but not for a very long distance as that curve comes out about half way. I think maybe I misunderstood just what Paul meant by the long flat side and I hope that my post didn't confuse him any.

Here is a pic from Pat Ganahl's book "Ford Performance" showing the pointer. This seems to be the opposite to what is said above.

No, the crank rotates clockwise when you are standing in front of it viewing it. And the pointer is on the right or passenger side.

Several of us are having trouble trying to post pictures. See the posts above or where ever they are now. I finally got one to post over in the lounge as a test but it was so small that it is hard to see. It is 22,527 bytes on my drive and posted as 6,060 bytes. Anything below 30 K used to go into a post but I think they must have something that has changed. I also can't delete posts any longer and I don't want to just keep trying to post a picture to test.

Fellas... sorry for your frustrations posting images.
There is currently something "broke" (techie-term ) in the Gallery and picture-handling software.
I have collected the error messages and sent them to Brent... when he checks in, I'm sure he will address it.
For now, no pics...
(if you have any other place to upload to, you still can link to external pics, though.)

Thanks for the information here and what you gave me this morning. I am on my other computer now with the other op.sys. and was starting to think I really am dumb. I am still learning a lot about the picture stuff as it is relatively new and I automatically suspect I have messed up when soomething doesn't work.

I put the flat part toward the top and the angled part toward the bottom. Well,,,thats the way I do it, for what it's worth.

Thanks for all the responses. There still seems to be a some doubt about the correct method. If it were put on wrong, does that mean your timing could be way off or just a few degrees off ??

IT could be off a LOT!!! You will need to verify TDC using SOME method other than the timing maker plate to be SURE.
I still think when your done the flat part will face up,,,,,,but you got to be SURE of TDC. Depending on how the cam/crank are set up it COULD go either way, but flat UP I would consider "correct".
