Default FE Rocker shafts ?

Hello guys, I broke the right bank rocker shaft. Doves replacement is very expensive,($800) ? are there other good quality aftermarket shafts out there ? I was told that even replacing the one from NAPA & buying "stands" for the ends, that it will still be weak, is that true ? There has to be a better & cheaper way to make FE heads stronger than spending $800 to buy Doves. I'm in no way, saying that Doves are not worth the expence, I just hate to spend that much when I've got other engine parts & machining to do. If I buy a stock replacement & stands from like NAPA, the cost is apx. $200 for the shaft & under $20 each for the stands. My motor did not,..... have the stands & that's where it broke, on the end where it didn't have support.
Any advise will be appreciated !
Thanks,
Kev

Funfer2, check with Precision Oil Pumps, 559/645-1951...they sell excellent thick-wall shafts for $120 per pair, tapped and plugged at the ends, with circlips instead of the cotter pins...I got their end and center stands, spacers and rocker studs for mine, very pleased with the quality and turnaround time.

You can save a little bit of money (but not a lot) by going with the Erson roller rocker set up. That set up runs about $620 + another $25 or so for the shim kit if you're using Edelbrock heads. It's a nice set up though. Complete roller rockers, shafts and supports including end supports. I installed a set on my car just 2 weeks ago.

If you want to go stock, I have the set up I took off my car that I'm planning on selling. Crane adjustable rocker arms, new shafts and "old" supports. The rocker arms and shafts have only 500 miles on them. The supports are what came on the engine but they look fine.

Carroll Carter of C&C Performance in VA is building my 427 Center oiler (454 stroker). He is highly regarded for his engines, especially big horsepower race engines and he is using the Erson roller set with my Edelbrock heads. He is very confident with them. All I can say about them at this point.

That brings up a very important question. George Anderson suggeset a local man that he often sends his heads to & does a great job. He also said that Erson has the shafts & a guy in Kansas custom makes the stands that uses the head bolt to secure them to the shafts. One man bought all 40 units for his super stock friends for super stck racing & has never had one break again ! So set me straight boys......I can use my steel heads, buy the shafts from Erson, & get the stands from the guy in Kansas . I then could use roller rockers from Erson ? If not, Chris, I may look futher into your stock set up seriously. All I'll need are springs & lifters ? I'm really want to step up to a solid cam or a roller if again....the cost isn't too high. What do you think boys ? Thanks AGAIN....for all your help !

I'll second Precision Pumps. Great service and great stuff. I have the stands and end supports, and they work great with the stronger shaft I already had from Harland Sharp.

funfer2 The erson part number is E918502 Check around for the best price. The trade off will be on the shipping. The only thing you might have to check is the pushrod length to make shore that the rocker is centered on the valve. You might want the shim kit just incase I was looking at these rockers myself, I have doves on the motor now I like roller bearings over bushings. Good luck Rick Lake

Kevin,

Brand new the rocker arms run $200 from Summit and the shafts are $239 from Summit. I could part with the whole setup for $200 plus shipping. Let me know if you're interested. I'd be happy to send photos if you'd like.

What price are you willing to pay for a complete new Erson
setup?

I had defective shafts from Erson which was a result of improper heat treating on thier suppliers part. We found this out at final cleaning before my rebuilt side oiler was going on the dyno. I contacted Erson and spoke to the Engineer who developed the FE setup and he confirmed the Q&C problems. He said they now use the same heat treating vendor that does the T&D shafts and that many racers are using them on their .800 lift roller cam setup without problems.

This brings me to you or anyone else who's interested. Erson has agreed to completely rebuild my set (only had 5 hrs. on them anyway) and the engineer is personally going to inspect my new shafts & assembly. I have to admit they stepped up took the blame and are doing the right thing. So I will have a brand new set available for sale that is personally checked by the engineer.

In my haste to get my engine finished and use the "best" parts I had Jesel's custom made and fitted to my engine. Best of luck and if anyone wants slightly discounted new set of Erson with stands send me a price.

Hello Tony, what's your bottom dollor for the set up ? Why are you selling them if they just rebuilt them for you? I have a 428, I don't know if they'll fit ? I don't even know if mine are the low or med rise heads. If they indeed will work maybe we can strike a deal. Can you send pics ?
Thanks,
kev

I had to go check my receipts to see what I paid for my Sig Erson Roller Rocker assembly and it was as I expected around $400 from Summit Racing. I wouldn't have an FE Without them or my Aluminium Edelbrock Heads.

Default you got a deal!

When I saw your post about the $400 Sig Erson Billet system I was sceptical to say the least so I just called Summit and was quoted $609.95 + tax + shipping. I don't know how you did it but consider yourself fortunate. BTW, I paid @ $650 total for my set.

I bought mine about two years ago. I had first ordered the Harland Sharpe rockers and that cost was about $400 but they shipped them without the shafts so I sent them back because the shafts were on back order and would not be available for a while.

You are right, my Sig Erson Roller Rocker Set #ERS-918502 for the stands, rockers and spacers total cost was $609.95.

I am sorry for mis-leading anyone.

Clois

But I am still real happy with my set up.
