Default 428 Slow crank at operating temp??

Hi all this has been covered but not in a situation the same as my problem. ( yes I did a search)

My car starts like a charm and shuts off cleanly.

But when its hot and up to temp ( 190F) if I shut it off then go to start it immediately its a real slow crank as though the battery is dying.
I thought it may be starter heat soak so I taped up my starter with that ceramic/fibre glass cloth tape ( good to 1000F) and that made no change. ( fibre frac)
I have two good frame grounds in large welding cable. I used this heavy cable for pos. and neg runs in the car.
Motor to frame is grounded with a cable and battery neg to frame immediately at trunk where battery sits is the second cable.

Lastly if this is a timing issue, why is it not a problem with cold starting? It starts in the first crank??
Too much advance should be trouble either hot or cold?? No?

Thanks

Tim

No

A hot engine will combust the fuel mix much more readily, and too much advance will make hot starts a fight between precombustion and your starter. An easy test; loosen your distributor timing bolt mark its current location with a peice of tape, warm up your engine , shut it down and retard your timing 5 deg. , i'll bet it starts right up.

good luck, KK

Default good info

Thanks Karl for the quick reply. Will do that in the morning.
Hope that's what it is. Easy fix.

Take a look at the link below, it details a fix for your very problem, it's quite common on Chevy's apparrently.

I hope this helps.

Whaler,

Hope that Charles fix is the problem. If not then you could have a starter whose windings have become heat sensitive over a period of time and some of the insulation could be breaking down allowing loss of tourque when hot. If the timing fix doesn't help, try an old known good starter if it isn't to big of a job to change them out. I fought that for almost 3 months in my 428 until I finally put in an old starter that I had laying around and that cured it. I then went out and bought a new starter and have had no problems since.

Ron

it's your starter i just went through this with my 428. get a new cheap starter and try it. when i took my promblem starter out the shim was out of position on the shaft . i could tell the starter stayed engaged which made it over heat. this starter was new and still messed up. LT.

Hi guys. I have not got to it yet as I just got out of bed from Graveyard shift.

The history on the car is this:
I built the car and put it all together.
I have only just broken it in.
It has passed the inspection and is now insured for the road. I have driven it around town 3 times.
The starter is one of the high output jobs from PAW. In both cases where this has happened to me, the car was driven 20-30 minutes and was at about 190F.

I will try and get the timing done tonight.
Thanks for all the input

Tim

Default good stuff

Okay I got at it this morning after running it up to temp.
Checked the static timing and I was about 16-18 degrees adv at idle.
Knocked it down to 12ish and locked it. Had to bump up the idle screw a tad too.
The car was now about 190 or more from sitting the whole time and I shut it off then started it . Cranking was much better and decently fast. Started easy.

Thanks guys.
Tim
