Default Anyone use the MSD advance timing box

http://store.summitracing.com/partde...art=MSD%2D8680

I am asking because of my hot start problem I experienced.
I had to knock my advance back abit to ease hot starts and the strain on the motor.
I haven't really gone back and tried to bring it back up a degree at a time finding the sweet spot. But I was told about these boxes ( if u have MSD) where you can dial in advance upto 15 degrees from the drivers seat.

PN 8680

Default Small world, I just put on in Friday

Whaler,

I installed my 8680 on Friday. I will not be much help to you on experience with it, since my car is at the "go-cart" stage of building. Easy to set up. It does work. It appears to be self-calibrating upon startup.

I got the thing for two reasons, to retard timing for easy starts (this is especially helpful when the car is hot), and to tune in more advance for more power to take advantage of better gas, cooler weather or whatever. I do know that there is a lot of "free" power to be had with fine tuning the timing.

My last project car (the one I sold to get into the Cobra business) had problems because the amount of advance it liked for power really made it tough to start at times.

Maybe others will weigh in who have more experience with this.

John

Thumbs up

Excessively advanced timing is an interesting thing.

A vacuum advance unit under light throttle (thus deep vacuum) can advance the spark WAY beyond what would normally be considered appropriate. Under these light load conditions engines generally get better mileage with more advance.

As you step on the gas the vacuum signal drops and the timing is instantly retarded. Kinda slick for an "old school" technology approach!

Modern method is electronic advance using engine sensors. Of course I know all you guys are smarter than a "computer" or an old fashioned vacuum advance unit,

So,,,,,dial away on that MSD box!

Ernie

PS Hey, just something to think about.
