Default Duel Quad set-up ?

I would like some of you guys that run duel quads to help me decide on either a Barry Grant carb, using my RPM manifold & new turkey pan or....I have a guy wanting to sell a Offenhouser intake with 2- Holley 600 crabs that have been rebuilt, all the lines & linkage, ready to run for around $600. He is going to try and take pictures for me. (Iwouldn't buy it otherwise) I figure that, a B.G 850 carb is $500 & this quad set-up is 600 smackers, why not get a manifold, two carbs ect... for a 100 bucks more ? Agree/disagree ? Now, I've never tuned a duel quad system, what about TUNNING......., gas milage, throttle responce, hp & torque differences between duel/single carb, the good & the bad of using this system ect. ect. ect. !
I will appreciate the advice.
Thanks,
kevin

Kevin,

Ive been running a 2x4 setup for several years and love it . I wouldnt get the offy set up though, Ive been told they are inferior to stock setups and $600 for that one is not a steal.

you can buy stock (original) low riser setups in that price range with carbs on e-bay most any time.

tuning is a bit of a trick at first, but once you understand it , there is really not that much to it.

some people believe there is no difference in performance , but every piece of literature on the subject i have found suggests an increase of 30 to 50 bhp, I have never run a single carb on mine , so I cant personally say.

besides ...................they look SO COOL..

Hum....I know the offy is an old intake but, so is the factory. Maybe it doesn't work well on FE's ? I'll have to do more reseach.

I looked up an ad on ebay from a couple of months ago, a factory 427 duel quad, manifold only, for $690 & it did not meet the reserve. Not saying that there's not cheaper but, this one is $600 for all the lines ect. Anyone know more about the Offenhousers ?

Kevin, there was one on e-bay yesterday for $400 with no takers.

watch out for the midrisers , they will bolt up ,but are a poor port match, they are also twice the $. if you are patient for a couple weeks I'll bet you find an original for $300- 400. those 1850 holleys are $200 brand new and less than a hundred used.

KobraKarl...are you saying the lowriser is the one to buy? DO they match up with Edelbrock heads? It's going on a 428 in my case

Joe,

only suggesting that kevin run the low riser , his line says original 428....stock 352, 390, 428 heads are all ( with some spectacular rare exeption) low riser heads .

I dont know much about aftermarket aluminum heads, whether they are a compromise to be port matched or whether they are low or mid riser or even if they are both available??

there are guys here who know Edelbrock absolutely .........cmon boys , pipe up.

The Elderbrock instructions say to only use mid-riser,as this is what ports they were made for.
