Default Which Roller Rockers should I get?

Ok, I've had my problems with Harland Sharp and now Precision Oil Pumps (See thread "What the heck???"), so what should I get now?

Erson? Dove? Other???? Something really reliable to be used with a cam with about .540 lift. Maybe I should just put the stock rockers back on.

brent call ken at oregon cam grinders he might be able to help you. if not try the stock setup and see if you have problems with that. good luck

Brent Mills Brent you just dumped 600 in to the motor and STILL don't know what is causing the problem. Before you waste another 600 how about we find out what the problem is. T&D, Jesel and Erson for the best with Shelby behind them Erson is a bolt on there T&D and Jesel need head work to make them fit. If there is a problem with the new set you just got from Presision oil pumps send them back for being defective. Ask George what to use. Sent that motor to George and get a new bullet for the car. It's time to take that horse outback and and put it out of your misery. Rick Lake

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Dove actually makes the rockers for quite a few different companies, Harlan Sharp being one of them. Find out which ones are made by Dove, then you'll know which ones to stay away from, if you want to try a different company. Right now I'm using TND, and they have a nice set-up. Extra oiling to cool the springs. Set them once and you're done, you can even take them all apart and put them back together in the same order and the valve clearance will still be there. They're not cheap...you're probably looking at around $ 1000.00, but well worth it.....

What about the FE Max stainless steel roller rockers? I think they supplied them to Shelby with the name "Shelby" on them. The FE Max are identical to the Shelby's but cheaper because they don't have the "Shelby" name. Call Gary or Blaine at 1-530-378-1075 and make some inquiries. Does anyone else have any experience with this brand of rockers?? I would like to know of others with this type. I have already bought a set but I am still putting the motor together so I can not pass judgement as to their quality. I can only hope that they are as good as they were recommended to me.

This is in reply to Paul's question about the FE Max Stainless rockers same as Shelby uses. I have been running a pair for at least two years. I had to measure for a new set of pushrods because the stock rods did not work for me. The rockers have performed flawlessly. You may have to change shim washers to position the rocker depending on your heads. I found this to be the case using the edelbrock heads. Also you will want to use studs instead of bolts. These can be purchased through edelbrock dealers.

Default FE MAX / Shelby rockers...

When you order the FE-MAX or Shelby Rocker setup (same thing), be sure to tell Gary what heads you are running; Edelbrock, etc. He sets them up accordingly.

They are nice, work well, and if you ever have any problems with them, you can ship them to him and he'll fix it for ya, no problem. Good guy, good products and reasonable too.

Thanks for the replies Paul and decooney. Gary sent me the Arp studs and the correct Smith Bros pushrods. It sounds like I will be happy with the setup. This is encouraging. Now back to the assembly.

Just added info, but rebuildable roller rockers are nice for the long haul.
Crane has a nice roller and is rebuildable.

Brent, the problem you are having is NOT your rocker arms! Precision Oil makes great rocker assemblies. Mine are working great. You definetly have a serious problem, but I can just about garuntee it is not with your rocker arms! Just about any assembly you use will last more than a 1000 miles. The advice to go to stock rockers was a good idea, having George work on your engine is an even better one!

larryar, I hear what you're saying, but the problems I have had are completely separate.

1. My last engine broke stock type pushrods with Harland Sharp rockers.

2. Second engine only common link was the rocker arms which I carried over from the last engine (different block, heads, and builder) broke the cup of a pushrod (same problem as last engine, and coincidentally, the same rocker arm).

3. Bought new rocker arms, and now either an oiling problem or a hardening problem with the adjusters. Either way, the problem is completely different than my last problem. The out of adjustment issue from the cups on the POP rockers wearing is a completely different problem than my last one, as the harland sharp rockers never were out of adjustment.

4. A builder suggested he had identical problems with POP rockers on the dyno.

Brent,

Don't go blow more money on another rocker system yet! I had heat treating issues with my Erson's which BTW they completely rebuilt at no cost to me. They owned up to the flaw and stood behing thier product. That said I decided to got to Jessel's anyway and sold the Erson's to a Club member here. Have the POP system rebuilt and talk to George or someone knowledgeable in FE's and get past these issues once and for all. Best wishes!

PS. My spare 428 has the Comp Cams Heavy Duty Blue roller rockers and it runs great and they are terrific in case you eventually swap them out. Very few of us (me included) really need T&D's or Jessel's with the set-up's were running.

I'm very happy with my Comp Cams Pro Magnum 1.6 Roller Rockers. They are rebuildable!

(and don't forget the Comp Cams chrome moly push rods!)
