Ballast Resistor for 428FE Ignition?
My 428FE is equipped with a Unilite Mallory distributor with electroic (phot-electric shutter) module inside the distributor (#605?). Feeding that distributor is a Mallory Super Coil and feeding the coil is a MSD 6AL multi-discharge unit.
In reading up on this setup, both Mallory AND ERA state quite emphatically that there MUST be a ballast resistor (Mallory Part #700) in the circutry to protect the 605 unit inside the distributor.
It seems this $100+ electric eye is prone to power surges from various reasons (jumper charging, battery charges, kill switch use when engine is running, planets aligning , etc)
So I went out and got that ballast resistor from my speed shop. Just where do I put this thing? Is it supposed to go on the RED wire in between the coil and the distributor? If so, where do you physically mount it?
Other schematics show the resistor on the key switch circut. Physical mounting of the resistor on that leg of the circut poses no problem. I am all ears.
