Default 496FE pump gas, 675ft/lb & 668HP

We just finished this 496C.I. FE for Sal Gianino for his new ERA cobra. This is a 4.310 bore Shelby block with a 4.250 stroke steel billet H. Valasco crankshaft. Scat 4340 H-beam rods, JE 10.5 to 1 pistons. This engine even has a hydraulic roller camshaft and idles at 900rpm's. We used the Edelbrock heads with our stage 2 porting, 2.19/1.75 valves, dual springs with T&D roller rockers. The engine has a Shelby dual plane intake, sam as Eldebrock Performer RPM. This made great looking and running engine with it polished pent roof valve covers and aluminum oil pan. The engine made over 600ft/bls @ 3000rpm's and max torque at 4200 to 4400 rpm's. Max hp was at 5700 to 5800 rpm's and it still made 640hp at 6400rpm's. Look forward to Sal getting this in his new cobra. Thanks Sal for letting us build you this great engine.

What happened to the hp and torque numbers you list on the subject line of your post? They don't match what you quote in your post

It looks like maximum figures were listed in the subject line, and other observed hp and tq figures within the text of the post...

Keith -- if it's not too much to ask -- how much to duplicate the effort?

Also -- what carb?

Thanks.

I think he means 600 FP at only 3000 and 675 at 4200-4400. For the HP, it is still making power at 6400 but it has passed peak of 668 at 5800.

Keith, just out of curiosity, what do you think my engine would make in torque and horsepower, as I did not dyno it. It is a 4.310 bore and 4.125 stroke also with a Velasco crank, 13 to 1 Wiseco pistons, Jesel roller rocker system, billet Oliver rods, .700 lift Comp. roller cam, E-brock heads seriously massaged by your ex partner with 2.25 & 1.75 valves, external Peterson single stage oil pump, ATI balancer, and Meziere water pump. The intake is a port matched E-brock Jr. with a Braswell massaged HP 4150 that if I recall correctly flows in the 1000 CFM range. What do you think? I built the engine, and saw no reason to dyno it at the time.

That sounds like a nice motor. What's the price tag on a set up like that, ball park? Feel free to private message me if you don't want to post it.

Is this another unpaid advertisement? I saw Southern Automotive (who pays for banner ads on this site BTW) dyno a 510CID 427 SO that ended up at 660HP with a lousy set of dyno headers and torque figures in the 650+ range (they were still going at it when I left). Compression ratio was higher, and it ran on pump gas if they serve 100+ Octane where you fill up. The thing I hate about dyno stuff is unless you are using the same brand/model of dyno in the same atmospheric conditions, or correcting to the same, they are about as reliable and truthful as your local politician if making comparisons.

Default 496 questions

I would like to sat that I have e-mailed Brent Milss several personal messages about advertising on this sight. I have yet to hear from him. I have no problem with paying and offering some discounts to the members of this sight. This engine cost about 22,000.00 turn key of the dyno with the high torque starter and aluminum flywheel. We used a DaVinci 950HP carb done to our specs for our engines. This engine with 12.5 to 1, our CNC ported heads and a solid roller would yield about 800HP. Mr. Turpin I believe your engine should make somewhere in the 750 to 800 HP range. As far as the dyno comment this is correct if the owner of the dyno does not keep his machine calibrated. We do NHRA national record engines and these guys know how fast there cars are to within a few hundreths. So me giving bogus HP numbers does not fly with these guys. We can duplicate this package for any one. We also recently finished a 489C.I. FE with 14 to one compression with Dove high riser heads and a dove single 4bl. intake and a dominator carb that made 870HP. This engine as run 8.39 @ 160MPH in a 2700lb. car so I believe my dyno is fairly accurate. I hope we can get someadvertising on hear soon . Thanks Keith

Keith,
Two of my friends have your motors in their Cobras. Just rode in another one recently... DV carb and all... Not only can I say I've heard great things about the results you produce, but have experienced the results first hand in a Cobra with your one of your specialty Shelby Aluminum motors - with dyno sheet.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with you posting your dyno results on this site. Many of us saw your voluntary plea to help Brent out for some advertising.. If these posts bring you more business and you stay in business to build more for us Cobra fans, thats great. Nice work. Member discounts are always appreciated by all.

Default How much HP??

WT Turpin OK Wayne it makes about 2 mules and a squirrel in a pinwheel more power than Daves. Gald to see your back and the car is ready. Give Dave S A call, I don't know if he is coming, He's in love again, North of the border. He found someone one smart as himself, he's still prettier. At the rear wheels you car makes about 630 hp and 650 tork. Your at jockey wieght, so you have the advantage. Cars apart, the all nighters started. Bell housing was .024 off center and knocked the pilot bearing ofut of the crank. This is why the starter was eatin last year at R&G. George is breakin my chops. Hope the weather is OK. We had 48 degrees sat morning. At least the thing can't overheat. Stay well, see you in 2 weeks, Who's picking up the check again, Bob Self???You got him last year. Rick Lake

Keith- Thanks for the reply and keep up the good work in developing the FE engine. That 489 High Rise engine looks to be very strong.

Rick- Dave S. is in love with the new Ford GT40 and is scheming to get one.
I feel your pain in dialing in that Lakewood bellhousing especially if the engine is in the car. It can be time consuming as I just did the same thing. It was a pain to get the hardened dowel pins out of the shelby block. No room to work, but I got them out and dialed that sucker to within .002. Mine was out about .034. Good luck and see you in about 10 days. Talked to Stacy and he said he was going to try to make it.

Keith has always built top notch stuff. I'd say with the new heads coming down the road, power should increase.

Will someone run over there with a digital camera and take some pictures of this engine for cryin' out loud! Sounds like a work of art.

Cstraub: Isn't AFR supposedly developing some heads for BB Fords (about time!)? Are those the heads you're speaking of? Does anyone know when they're going to be available?

On the future AFR heads...

Which BB Ford - FE or 429/460 platform, or both?

No, it is not AFR. I am swore an oath. . .I will say they flow big numbers and the mfg. will release them at PRI this year. AFR's next head is the Ls1. I just got done to some prototype parts for those.
