Default First Leap: Looking for 428 FE in Northern California

Well, I've decided that I want to target a mildly wild 428 FE. Idea is to start building an engine now, and then purchase the Cobra rolling chassis when I have the dough for the one I want.

Anyone have any leads on a rebuildable 428 PI, CJ or SCJ block? If I can find a rebuildable block, with the crank and flywheel, that would be cool, too. Most desireable for me is a 428 PI from the 1965 - 1967 date codes, but a pre-1970 CJ or SCJ would be great.

I work in Silicon Valley, and would pick up the block anywhere from Santa Barbara to Sacramento.

I've watched Ebay, but I see a lot of stuff from waaaaay outside of CA, AND I'd prefer to deal with someone with a good reputation.

By the way, the idea of building the engine now and buying the car later is my attempt to keep the dream alive, despite the down economy --- which I hope is taking a positive turn recently.

Try dennis at dsc motorsports. He carries a full line of FE blocks parts etc and is in calif. Prices are very good also. www.dscmotorsport.com good luck, G.

No 428 blocks exist before 1966.Look for C6ME-A block,although not all were PI blocks(it gets confusing) C8ME were CJ blocks with heavier main webs. chuck

I bought 2 blocks on e-bay before I found what I was looking for. It was not that bad, but you do have to do research. You can get a block shipped across the country for under $150. Problem is, if you never have dealt with e-bay, this can be a harrowing way to learn. Keep looking on e-bay, and get folks here to help you. Study all the block ID stuff.

You may want to stop by Mustang Ranch on El Camino in Santa Clara. If they don't have anything collecting dust in the shop you can always put up a wanted poster on their bulletin board. I've had good luck doing that in the past.

There is also a swap meet in Pleasanton this weekend if you don't mind a little rain.....

Yeah, I bet he does. And he is VERY reputable. But why would he sell a block that he could turn into a profitable engine? Especially since these 428 CJ blocks are becoming rare? What about Kieth Craft? He has them too...

You need to find a little old lady with a car in her garage that has the engine you want...getting a good deal can be fun.

Thanks for the suggestions and the leads. I want to build the engine myself, minus, of course, the machining and balancing, rather than have someone build one completely for me. I'm sure Southern, Gessford, and Keith Craft build nice engines, though. I'll probably go that route for a second engine (alloy 427 SO?) after I get tired of a 428.

Also check the classifieds at the FE forum. www.fordfe.com. I find 428 blocks and parts there all the time. I sold a NOS 428 block to Keith Craft Racing a while back but said it was going in a customers car after being stroked and built to the balls! Hey Mike...what block did you find besides the first one? Glenn.

Hhmmm, this is a good day. Not only is the wife warming up to the idea of me getting a Cobra (all I've talked about for, what, four years...), she's bought in to the idea of putting in a big block (against the advice of "Bitten by the Snake" video, which she's overheard a number of times now...) and building a car as close to original as possible.

Now, I'll I need is the economy to recover in some robust fashion...

DKing, I've found the Ford Fe forum to be a weath of knowledge. Some really great minds hang there. Guys who we there in the day and really know their stuff. Good luck with your search. The chase is one of the most exciting parts of the build to me. Take your time and research what you want in a 428. The options are endless. If your a do it yourself guy like me the forum guys will offer the best info possible with tons of options. Use the search engine for the basic stuff as the archives are loaded with info and post for things you need help with. wish you the best of luck, G.

I have a 428 for sale on the central coast. Santa Maria to be exact. The motor came out of a 68 Galaxie station wagon that I was going to use as a tow vehicle for my FE powered Mustang. Here are the specifics on the motor.

Block: C7ME casting, 8A19 date code, X cast in the lifter valley indicating high nickel block, extra webbing also cast in the main bearing area. The block is standard, never bored. The vin stamped on the back of the block matches the vin from the window tag on the body of the car.

Crank: C6ME, same crank as 68 and early 69 Cobra Jet. Never turned, has the harmonic dampener.

Rods: C6AE

Heads: C8AE-H, 428,390.

Distributor: C8AF-12127-Y, date 712.

FFR428,

I had several posts about it here. Search bomelia. It was a great block, but not a CJ and that really was what I was looking for. Got a 428 CJ now, and just bought the rods. Get some pistons and a pressure plate, and I am off to the machine shop!

Im willing to part with everything for 975.

I might have a good lead on another 428, but I doubt it will be as good as the one I have now. The block might have some rust but the crank and rods could be useable. I'll check it out and post what I find.

I just cant afford to build this motor right now, otherwise it would be sitting between the shocktowers of my mustang. Much cooler than the 390 im running now.

For what it's worth I will be taking the '68 428 out of my car soon. It's Nothing special, but it is a decent 428... It runs well and would be something to drive with until you were ready to (re)build it into something special. The heads are big valve 390 GT (IP) units.
