turkey pan
I recently installed a turkey pan on my SPF SVO 351. Other than the great looks, does it actually improve performance. I know it is suppose to seperate the hot air the engine is putting off and suppose to trap the cold air coming in from the hood scoop. Like I mentioned before, other than the original look, I'm not sure how functional it really is.

I've heard from many engine builders that they actually DEcrease power by 10-20HP or so. ................but they sure look sweet!

"Many" engine builders? Which ones?
Did they elaborate as to exactly how the Turkey Pan caused this big power loss?
Did they actually dyno the engine with and without a Turkey Pan?
Thanks for the info!

Good point Pat ,
The only negative thing i can see using the Tpan would possible be difficulty in access to certain areas of carb for tuning purpose. There is no doubt that cooler air does get directed into the pan........ when building your motor factor in another 10-20 H.P. if your worried of the loss

I don't think it is so much the turkey pan itself that costs the horse power but the tiny little air cleaner you have to put in it.
Would some one please make a air filter that goes in and covers then entire top please?

They do make such an air filter, Motorsports Intl, El Cajon, CA 619-3909080. Aluminum with K&N filter.
As far as power you would have to have a DYNO to tell. The original turkey pans sealed off when the hood was closed so you only got outside air through the scoop.
If someone here can tell me the gain or loss on 15-20 HP in a 500 HP engine by driving the car more power to them. Most folks have alot less then they think anyway.

Pat:
I've heard it from a guy who heard it from Southern (I know, I know), but, I heard it first hand from Eric @ Perf. Engineering. I know Eric tested it on the dyno with a 600+HP 522 stroker (Like Brian's engine: bnewell). He got 20HP less with the pan on. But, when you're talking "600+HP"....are you going to notice 20HP less?
I simply don't think it breathes as well with the pan on. You really don't get a lot of cool air through the hood scoop (IMO). Plus, there is no "seal" on top of the pan to insure it's only getting the little bit of cool air the scoop provides. The scoop really would have been more beneficial if it had come off the windsheild (like the 69 Z-28 or a 70 Chevelle). That's where the air is. ............but it wouldn't look as cool!

I think the majority of the loss was through the H&S air cleaner with the K&N element. Eric H. @ Performance Eng. did in fact tell me that I had about a 20 HP loss with the smaller air cleaner. He said some guys will use the smaller air cleaners for shows, cruise-ins, etc. but when performance counts, they will switch to the larger oval type of air cleaner.
I have both air cleaners, but since I am more of the "Waxer" type of owner, I have never had the larger air cleaner out of the box.
But as Terry mentioned, when you are talking 650 HP, what the he!! does 20 HP mean!!!!

Did you all see the air cleaner test that was done about a year ago in Hot Rod (also done in Car Craft, I think) where they dyno'ed an engine with a bunch of different air cleaners on it.... there was something like a 2HP spread between a 14" wide, 6 inch tall cleaner and an S&H sized air cleaner. It flat amazed me.

Other functions too...
In hot weather it helps a bit to isolate heat away from the fuel bowles on the carb too, along with the help of fresh air coming in and circulating around the carb and bowles.
I use to run the flat factory aluminum deflector shield on my 1968/SS and 1969/Z28 Camaros, just under the carbs. Without it, the fuel would boil in the bowles on those hotter days. I tested it with and without more than a few times. It does work. Seems to work well here too.

Someone on the FF forum fabbed a oval airbox to fit around the oval air cleaner. Sealed base with a piece of aluminum on the underside of the hood to seal it up nice. He is still building the car but it looked GREAT. I'm running a tri-power setup and will make one also. If you want to see do a search on the FF forum for "302 ram air box". I'll try to post a link later. A very cool item. G.

This is as good a time as any to ask a crazy question I have wondered about.
I understand the need and use for the turkey pan ,but why didnt dual quad motors have the same problems ? I have never seen one on a 2 four set up,,just curious,,Tk

I THINK it was because they only raced the single 4 barrel - the turkey pan was a racing "tweak"...

Hey Rick, (rdorman) I'm a little confused about your question. Are you asking for something different than the Stelling & Helling assembly that would seal against the hood ? That's what I want anyway, even if I have to fab a pan for it like the Pro-stock cars. (I do have the S & H and a turkey pan but have not used it yet)
Rick Bagley- When I red your answer to Ricks question, I again thought you were talking about a sealed pan. I mailed "motorsports intl" and Marge wrote back saying she has the S & H set-up, round or oval. I think she's talking about the same assembly I have now ?
To clear my little mind ,which type of system are you talking about ?
