Look for a $ sign in the crank. If you see one it's steel. From what I understand the dollar sign told the plant workers it was a high dollar steel crank rather that and cast iron. Good luck. G.

Finally the 391 (forged) crank as well as all the FT cranks have a bigger snout (as well as some dimensions on the flange) that's incompatible with FE type dampeners. While it can be machined to use in an FE,that's not typical work done by rebuilders. It's my understanding that the later mirror blocks aren't as stout as the earlier ones that have the 352, I think it's because of newer style casting used (similar to the thinwall small blocks)

hello everyone I'm new to this but I'm realizing there's much knowledge here and right now I need some help I've a 68 galaxie with a 390 engine want to soup it up some but keep it a sleeper I always thought that the 390 was a strong running engine...but I'm finding out it might be best to put in a 302 and I've had this car about 6yrs and the only thing I've done to it is put dual exhaust on it so right now I'm not too sure my compressions are low so I thought to buy 428 heads and replace my old ones but over here in hawaii you got to take what you can get and I'm not sure to what degree with this engine whether it been rebuilt or not so if anyone can point me in the right direction I'll appreciate it and I talk with a company in CA and they said they'll have a 390 crate engine pushing 325hp ready to drop in the galaxie if I wanted to go that route for $4,000.00 so if someone can tell me about this 390 engine and is the 302 better power wise...but money wise I think it's the 302

Jay

wing2bchun, is the 390 you have now in good running condition? If you have $4k to spend why not rebuild the 390 and get a new cam, heads, carb and intake? That will wake that pup right up.G.

wingbchun, I have an article in a magazine somewhere that tells how to build the 390 to produce well over 400 reliable horsepower. I think that I have the article at work.
E-mail me personally and I will see if I can find it and get the information on how you can order the the magazine if you are interested.
