MSD Dist. Timing Advance Recommendations

I'm looking for an initial timing advance recommendation for a MSD Pro Billet Ditributor. I have a 428SCJ, Dual 550cfm carbs, TunnelWedge Manifold, pocket ported Edelbrock heads. Can anyone offer a good starting point?

Joe:

I think you want a max advance of about 38 deg. Usually you'll have about 12-13 deg or so initial, so that leaves you with using the 25 deg mech advance stop from MSD. You'll probably want to change to the light silver springs to get as much advance as you can as quickly as you can.

Hopefully someone else can either confirm or deny these suggestions.

I have a 427so with med rise heads, 428pi alum manifold, 750 mighty demon carb, MSD por billet dist, MSD 6al box, blaster coil. I set my base at 19 deg and 37 by 2750 rpm. Starts and idles well, very snappy off the line and no complaints. I am adding a msd retard computer to set a 10 deg start to 800 rpm retard and a 5 deg retard for high gear. To save the starter and improve cruise mpg and performance.

Search timing advance in the forum. I posted very specific observations about my billet distributor installation. I ended up with 12 degrees initial 24-25 distributor advance and all in at 2800.

If you are using the MSD 6 box you will also want to play with the plug gap. I think I ended up at .045"
