Default fantasy engine build

ok Fe gurus,
I need to start soon building my spare motor,I thought it would be interesting to give you guys the guidelines and let you describe the build you would choose,cam,heads,crank,etc.
This is what I have thus far,427 CO block .030 ,Lemans steel crank,OR IU 428 crank,your choice,new lemans rods,I have an original med riser dual quad set up,dual plane the will be the fuel supply .
my parts budget is 3500.00,lets leave maching work and assembly labor out for fairness.the goal is a smuch usable horsepower and torque as feesible for a street car,I lean toward a radical sound,the car is just to be driven occasionally so streetablitliry is not a concern,top loader with 3.73 gear if that matters,has to be pump gas however,,

Tim....looks like you've got most of the stuff nailed down there except for a cam and heads. I would definitely go with the steel crank since you already have one. I think the only company that offers steel FE cranks is Scat...and they're a pretty penny.

I myself would go with a set of Edelbrock aluminum heads...order them bare and assemble them usually quality valves...and valve springs/retainers/shims, etc. to match your cam. I'd probably go with a brand new Erson shaft mount and rockers.

I usually use Comp Cams stuff....so I'd go with a solid lifter cam...maybe the next step down from the cam you're using in your other engine to get the revs down a little.

I'd use an Aviad road race pan...Edelbrock aluminum water pump....Good double roller timing chain...And MSD ignition stuff. Oh yeah....Pentroof valve covers too.

the TRUTH,,this engine really belongs to Kirkham inc,I have been commisioned by those folks to do a 3500 build challenge in order to beat Brent Fenimores 25k alum shelby,,it is to be picked up by a major network for a new reality show.

Get a cam that makes ALL its power down in the lower RPMs...your engine will last longer since it isnt winding so high! JMHO!

Hi Misfit: The engine you want to build could be done efficiently with

1. 428 Crank
2. New LeMans rods
3. Arias or Je pistons for the correct dome height for a C/R around 10/1 and 460+CID
4. C80E Cobra jet heads or the late ´63 406 heads that would give even higher compression, cast# C3AE-C, made only for a short time in 1963 as Ford had decided to go the whole nine yards and produce the 427, but you must install the larger valves.
5. The cam that you should use should approximate the old 427 Medium Riser drag cam that was 324 / 324 and close to ,600 lift, solid lifter. Just remember to tap and plug the lifter galleys and to install a ,090 oil restrictor orifice in the oil gallery going to the rockers.
6. Valve train parts: Go with Comp. Cams or Erson
7. ignition: Go with a Vertex or Joe Hunt mag that are now on sale on E-Bay. The old C3AE dual point will do nicely also with a suitable MSD amplifier.

Thanks for the post, Ironically I have a set of the heads your talkign about with 2.19 sodium filled valves installed,but have gotten hung up on aluminum,what if I used eldebrocks ? will I lose a lot ? if so which chambers ? 76 or 72 ?

My list of parts.
Sell the dual four on ebay for $$$ and buy Victor Jr. and 830 CFM race carb (best carb for the $)
sell steel crank and 428 crank and get SCAT 4.25 stroke crank
BB Chevy Eagle rods
Crower Cam with 114 degree lobe center with about 290 degrees duration.
Edelbrock 6008 heads
forged pistons with 10:1 compression
E-brock water pump
MSD distributer with 6AL
I would change the gears or you will not be able to keep rear tires on the car. This engine will be tons of fun on the street.

If you must stay with the 3.73 gears use the steel crank, Eagle Chrysler rods, sell the LeMans rods, and go with the best valvetrain your wallet can stand. Go with a Crower cam with lots of duration and a lobe center closer to 108 degrees. Aviad Pan if original style frame. This will not be a fun engine on the street. But it will make a good track engine.

Thiose are interesting ideas,Now you have me thinking,do you know off hand what cubic inch the 4.25 set up will yield ?what kind of prep cost for the crank and rods,aalso have you guy shad any simular builds dynoed,,?

Tim, that would be 477ci.....

I looked into the Scat components when I wanted to build my FE....pretty sure the Scat crank is a cast crank....but they come balanced. They do make some billet cranks....but they are really big bucks. So the cast component would be zero prep cost.....the others would cost a little to balance.

The rods are BB rods....no prepping there.

With a dual plane MR intake manifold and a 4.00 stroke crank everthing else the same. 495 HP and 530 ft-lbs.

More importantly the car with this engine on the street was awsome. The owner of this car had us take out the 3.54 and put in a 3.31 to calm the car down. This car was tested by Car and Driver with the 3.31 (you can read the article on our web site) 0-60 3.5 secs.

A little known advantage of wider lobe centers on the cam shaft is that it helps with restrictive mufflers...

With a similar engine to the one you outlined and a WR Top Loader, which rear end ration do you recommend, a 3.31 or numerically lower? I am always willing to listen to free advice.

Unfortunately I won't be at the summit. I am heading out to Alta to go skiing tomorrow (half an hour from Provo), but have to be in NYC Wednesday morning for business. I was granted a special audience with the Pope (probably a politically incorrect joke, but what the Hell) on Tuesday to make sure everyrthing fits. It's kind of like going to Saville Row for a suit or to Purdy's for a gun fitting (only a KMP is less expensive than a Purdy).

It depends... 3.07 in our fuel injected beast is too tame. 3.23 or 3.31 depending on if you are cruising or not. If it is going to be a highway cruiser then 3.07 might be the hot ticket. For track use I would lean towards a 3.54.
