Default How much total advance?

I'm redoing a 427 SO FE. alluminum heads , 11.5 ratio, 2-4s.Back 30+ years ago I had a few FEs (406 and 428).38° total was the destination. Stock distributors only did 10° (20° crank) 18° initial was a hard start. Now add the Veri-cam remember those?I had the the distributor done elongating the slots and replacing the springs so the distributor would do 30° crank and initial advance was a mear 8°. Total advance came in around 3,000 RPM.Old stuff.

How much ° total advance are you running on a 427 SO FE?
How much ° initial advance are you starting with?
How much advance is the distributor doing and at what RPM does it go to full advance?

My engine is set at 10 initial at 900 rpm idle, 38 total at 3200 rpm. These are the recommendations from the builder (Southern Automotive) and I've found they work pretty well. I'm running a 484 stroker, 10:1, aluminum Edelbrock heads, dual 660 center squirters and the MSD ignition and distributor. The MSD distributor comes with a kit of springs and bushings to tailor the advance curve. The smallest bushing is good for 14 degrees (distributor) for 28 degrees of crank advance.

So a Mallory HYFIRE VI with an adjustable automatic start retard(under 500 RPM) would be a good thing?
