FE Timing Chain Cover ?'s

I have have a bunch of questions about FE timing chain covers.

Thanks in advance for answering them.

I am building a 428 FE and want to as much as possible to keep it period correct.

How reliable are older timing chain covers?

Will any FE tcc work on a 428?

Are there any spots I need to watch for that might be issues?

Does Ford make replacement covers?

Does any other manufacturer?

Shelby makes one. Cast aluminum, CNC machined, bolts on like stock, $120.00, good stuff. Doesn't look period correct, though!

Not really a problem piece on the OEM's, just make sure your seals are installed correctly and add a little 3M in the 90 degree turns. Yeah, there are after markets, but I never bought one.

Or, locally, you can get a period correct cover from Mustangs Unlimited in Manchester or from Danbury Competition Engines.

Most of the timing cover is obfuscated by the water pump.

I have a stock FE cover that I started to polish but, decided to buy a chrome one. If you wanted to finish sanding/polishing it, I'll sell it to you cheap. Let me how much you would want to spend. I'll have to get my camera BACK..... from a friend to take a photo.

Ok there are some differences. The C8 cover I have is correct for 428cj/scj. It has an extended tube cast in on the right side. Second hole up from the bottom for the cj/scj type timing pointer. It also has the pointer holes reinforced into the casting with threaded inserts. The C3 cover on my 406 does not have the tube or threaded inserts and all bolts are flush. There are also year codes on them. It has the year ex: 68 with a circle of dots around it on the face above the casting number. So they all have the same bolt pattern and gasket but if you look at a few different ones you will see the difference. I also have a C8 with a 68 date code available. It's been media blasted and painted viper blue. I did take the time to fully polish my C3 cover for the 406. Kevin, it took the better part of a week to sand and polish spending several hours a night. DOH! forgot some things... the old cover will be fine. Watch out for ones that are worn badly on the inside from cam walk. You will see an round indentation on the "X" on the inside of the cover. A small wear pattern is okay but anything really bad stay away from. Some of the FT timing covers I think had a larger hole for the larger steel crank snout of the steel FT crankshafts. The crank seal hole in the std FE cover is aprox 2 3/16". That's all! G.

If you watch e-bay, you will see them come up from time to time, thats where I got mine.

I actually have two tc's already. I just checked on and it is a d2te-xxxx, the other is off-site and I will check. One has a pointer, one doesn't.

My concern was if the get brittle over time or not as thet seem fairly flimsy and light.
