How many of you FE guys are using...
Iron heads and cast cranks? I can't seem to find any new crankshafts with a 3.78 stroke....I'm sure Scat would make me one for a couple grand.....but no thanks....
I was just wondering how many of you FE guys are using original parts in your new engine build....iron heads, cast cranks, 60's vintage rods, etc.
I'm trying to plan my FE build accordingly....

I have a 63 406 that's running the stock lowriser heads and tripower induction. A cast 428 crank with lemans rods hold the bottom end along with the block crossbolted. My 406 block has the oil pressure relief valve and larger oil passages like the 427. Kind of a poor mans 427 if you will and it's not costing that much to build which is nice.....well not as much as a sideoiler anyway LOL. G.

If you have a 406 with 4.125 bore and a 428 crank with a 3.98 stroke ,you have a 428.As I understand it a 428 crank will require 428 pistons.

My standard bore [and stroke] SO short block [a 68] contains 39 year old forged crank, LeMans rods and 41 year old, first design pistons [with "knorbs" on 'em] and turns 7000 all day.
Last year, I installed Shelby stage II heads. Have bagged and saved the iron med risers which have 2.25"/1.75" Manley Severe Duty valves and mild bowl and short side porting. Probably only need stem seals replaced.
Good machine work is slightly more important than component selection IMHO.

My 427 is out of the car for an overhaul. It is smoking like George Burns, I'm rebuilding the motor to include aluminum heads and water pump. If you want my original parts, (cast iron heads and water pump) please let me know.

'64 original high riser iron heads and dual four barrel high riser Ford ally intake. Bolted to a '66 side oiler block with a 428 crank and LeMans rods.
...like Ziggy, driving from one gas station to the next! SUPER FAST car, 11.90 ET.

My engine builder reccomended that I stay away from the original crank if I was to do any track time with the car. The original rod journals are too narrow and spin the bearings when when they get driven hard and heat up. Extra charge $1200.00 for a stroked crank.

The only thing "old" on my engine will be the block! 196? 427fe side oiler w/new stroker crank, aluminum everything, bored .030 over! 600/600! And I'll still say:"Yeh, it's a 1960's 427fe side oiler!"
I'll run this through a TKO600 5 speed trans., and will add a 200hp NOS system, as soon as the short warranty that my engine builder will give me, expires. 800ph!
Just thought I'd post to balance out this thread: old-vs-new!
A new set of slicks, and I'm gone!

I am running a 428 CJ bored .030 and a stock 428 crank that has been turned .020 and a stock Ford aluminium riser manifold. Turn 6500 RPM at the track (could do more but I need to save my engine another season). Everything else is new and has held together well for two full years of racing plus weekly local cruises.

Actually Tru...I lost the rods by $1.....thank goodness....hehehe....if anyone on here outbid me, I wanna extend my appreciation...hehehe..
I have a 425ci Windsor (built last year) in the car.....the car isn't 100% finished yet and I'm wanting to build another engine. I don't know what's wrong with me.
My block is a 390 block....C7ME-A, high nickel, thick cast.....but I really don't think I could get it to make the power that my small block makes.....484 hp and 500 lb-ft.
I was just basically testing the waters....seeing what you guys have done with original parts. I'm not financially able to start another engine build right now.....but if I come across parts that are worth the money, I may splurge.

I have a 390 2U cast truck crank you can have for FREE. It is in CT or pay the shipping if you need it......it's your for the asking. I'd rather it go to someone who can use it. I don't have anything else going on at the moment to use it in and it's in really good shape at .010/.010. G.

Except the roller rockers and the 2.25" intake valves everything is period. LeMans rods, 1966 forged crank, etc.
