Smile What does FE stand for?

So, what does FE really stand for? My guess is that FE stands for F*** Economy But I would really like to know what it really stands for. Any thoughts?

I was going to say Fast Engine, but I really liked FAT Engine!

I believe the real answer is Ford Edsel.

I've heard some authors say conclusively it stands for Ford Engine and they reject the "Edsel" version of same. But then again,,,,,, we'll never really know for sure.

Fat Engine? Well that would be old school. I guess the new alloy FE's would be "Phat Engines".

I've always referred to them as Fragile Engines, but now that I'm building one, I guess I shouldn't say that anymore :-).

The correct answer is Ford Edsel.

I know there are people to say it's not Ford Edsel, but I believe it is. I mean think about it.. "Ford Engine"? Come'on. Half a century of building cars and then they decide to call a new engine line Ford Engine? Please. The FE made it's debut (from what I've seen) in the Edsel. So Ford Edsel sure makes sense to me .

Since "Ford Engine" would not differentiate it from any other Ford engine series, that naming convention would not make any sense. Therefore, the believability index for Ford Edsel is much higher.

Isn't FE the scientific abbreviation for Iron? I always thought FE was like saying "the Big Iron" series.

"..according to the book, "Ford 1903-1984" by David L. Lewis, Mike McCarville, and Lorin Sorensen, on page 172 "The FE was devised principally by Robert Stevenson, who was named chief engineer at Ford Engine & Foundry (i.e. FE) where the FE was cast in 1957."

According to George Reid(author of many Ford related rebuild and parts interchange books)it stands for Ford Engine.There was a MEL series big block also,it stood for Mecury-Edsel-Lincoln,and FT series-Ford Truck.Is this the definitive answer? I do not know ,but Ron's explaination above makes sense as to the origin of the controversial moniker. chuck

I have always heard it was actually for Ford Engine. I had a 1957 Fairlane with the 332 P.I. in it and I asked the dealer then what the Fe meant and he told me Ford Engine as it came from some foundry, so that more or less fits what Ron (CW) posted. In Ernie's case it wouldhave to stand for Frigging Expensive. With his history of working on cars and then burning them up that would also fit.

Ron

Original Ford documents state:

FE= Ford/Edsel
MEL= Mercury/Edsel/Lincoln
FT= Ford Truck

And... BFD= Big F**king Deal
