it stands for Fat Edward
.....He was so fat (how fat was he?)...he was so fat he couldn't leave the foundry. The bay doors at the foundry were big enough to deliver his meals.
So he stayed there all day and all night producing blocks that would leak all over the ground and have men make falsy claims about its ability to go fast.
Later in life, he also met Fat Sally in the foundry, they married and raised a family there.
Their childrens' names were:
Fat Bobby
Fat Teresa
and
Fat Fred

Actually FE refers to the element of iron, like H refers to the element of Hydrogen, and O refers to the element of Oxygen. H2O represents a molecule of water, which is a combination of those elements.
but I digress.....

You all got it wrong. FE were the initials of HenryII's mistress.
Seriously, Mike got it right. It's for Ford and Edsel. Mercury was left out because it was in between . . . I guess. But Fe (for Iron) makes more sense since it stands for good old Detroit iron.

Name for Small Block?
Now that everyone seems to know what FE stands for, does anyone know the name use for the small block in the early days? I'm sure someone in the Cobra brotherhood knows, but if someone doesn't come up with it in a reasonable amount of time, I'll reveal the name.

Good try, Mike. The Y block was Ford's answer to the SB Chevy. Not too good of an answer, I might say, even though it did have some successes. The Y block got its name from the deep-skirt design, much like the FE's, whose pan rails extend below the crank center. The small block's pan rails are essentially even with the crank main centers.
Again, what was the original name of the small block?

I beleive it stodd for Fairlane Engine because they started at the same time.
Where or why the design of the intake that becomes part of the valve area?
The factory didn't use the weight savings of making that part out of alluminum as the racers did later.If I ever were to place one of those iron manifolds I'd have the hood off so I could stand above.Or I'd get a strong friend with lots of time to help.
