Default NEED HELP QUICK-opinion on 428 SCJ

I am looking at a 428 SCJ block on ebay.

First of all a I'm I crazy for even considering buying a block off ebay sight unseen?

Item number is 4509842896.

Is price reasonable? Do you think it is genuine? Is '70 block going to be a problem from an emissions standpoint. Figure I will need to add in another $350 to get it shipped.

428scj blocks are very good blocks, the big question is what are you looking for. The scj came with 427 medium riser rods and was a very good engine i have a 1969 428scj for my latest cobra but i will still probably upgrade to a 427, more money but a better engine. price is always the biggest consideration a good buy on a 428 block in good condition would probably be between500-1000 dollars, remember that the great e-bay tends to drive the prices up, good luck.

I've seen it. it looks ok be sure the seller will work with you if it isn't as it seems. I bought my 427 on e-bay. $11,000 unassembled but I had the right to refuse it if it wasn't as advertised. I picked it up and it was fine. It recently dyno'd at 502 bhp. Turns out it was built orignally by Louis Unser's shop in Santa Ana. Score...

Pay via credit card through paypal if you can, be sure to get a written garantee as to bore, condition and that you are entitled to a refund if it isn't as advertised. That way if you need to dipute the charges it will be easy to get your money back, including shipping.

BTW... Std. bore blocks here in California start at $1000 for dirty nasty pieces. A nice cleaned, tested piece here would be $1200 to $1500. Std bore 428 A code blocks start at $750-1000. But it's California. Gas is $2.50 a gallon and homes start at $350k.

Here's what we see (this one is in Kansas though) for $500 in California it's already .040 and needs to be .060

The CJ and SCJ production blocks are the same. Some SCJ blocks have the word "super" stamped down around the pan rail. I have a pic of it but have never seen stamped block personally. That block your looking at looks nice. The seller has a good feedback rating as well. He has a nice std 427 block I've been watching. As long as he stands behind it as everyone has mentioned go for it. The thing is if someone is looking for that date code in a CJ/SCJ restoration the price could go up quite a bit. Some guys will pay a good dime for a corect numbered block. Hopefully that is not the case here. Good luck, G.

Woo hoo... Thst was exciting. last minute bidding war. A good deal in my opinion still at $1500. I still have a standard bore C6ME-A (A code) for $750. Tanked, magged and shot peened for $750.

Man that thing did shoot up. I was watching too. $1500 is a little out of my league...

Funny thing, seems like every time I list one of mine they only go up to about $400. Hmmmmm.. Timing is everything on the Bay.

(edited to fix a typo....)

Here's another one, it's already .030 over (though the seller doesn't seem sure) The obvious difference is more than likely you are down to 1 or 2 more rebuilds at .040" over.

Mike,

A nice standard bore with little to no wear CJ block like that would sell for $600 or $700 here locally.

Bought a completely standard S.O. shortblock here once for $1500. It was literally being stored in an old chicken house (along with tons of other goodies, including THREE NOS CAMMERS - still in the Ford crate!) I took the S.O. shortblock apart, hit it lightly with a hone, put new rings on the pistons, new bearings - still running strong 5 years later.... I don't expect to ever do that again though....

I need to shop in Arkansas from now on. That said my pastor who lives in Harrison raised his kids in a house that use to be a chicken shack. You never know what kind of treasure you'll find in a chicken shack it seems.
