There are other parts you need to replace such as your oil cooler (that debris in the oil had to go somewhere), possibly your braided SS hoses that carries the oil to your cooler. I have dis-assembled my oil pump to see if there was any damage to the impeller and I also checked my oil pump rod that is driven by the distributor. During disassembly I found the smaller piece of the cam wedged against the distibutor and I will be taking my dist in to be checked as well.
I have already had the block magged/sonic checked and sleeved and I have sold it with the crank(un turned obviously) for $600.00. Ironically the crank magged okay.
PS-The pistons are Speed Pro's, Rods are C7AE-B (7 rods I sold for $175.00), remaining 7 pistons I sold for $100.00. And yes the cam was a comp solid lifter (571 lift 236 duration).
Merry Christmas
Clois

Clois,
Boy, what a mess. But you did good. You know the old saying, "they always run best just before they blow." Very good pictures and I hope that you soon have a new engine and are ready go by Spring. Best of luck and happy holidays. Kind of an oxy-moron saying that while you sit and look at the pieces of your engine, but I mean it.

Hey Clois,
Yeap that's the camshaft that going in my build. Well, not that "particular one" in your photos. You mentioned art work. Edvard Munch's THE SCREAM comes to mind. As Cobrs owners, we all have had that look on our faces, GOOD times and BAD times. What do you think, kind of like looking in a mirror.
Good luck on your rebuild. Take time out and have a great Christmas.
See ya
Dave

Time for a change
Clois,
It seems like you are one of the serious Open trackers around here.
If so you know it is time for a serious track engine that won't bankrupt you.
After I blew up my 427 SO on the track and the rebuild was $6.000 I knew I needed to make a change.
Rebuild that FE and put it in storage for when resale time comes and get yourself a nice 400 ci sb for 1/2 half the cost of an FE and as a bonus pick up an easy 100 HP over the same spec. FE.
You have read most of the posts around here and you know the serious guys are running small blocks.
Come join the club, you won't be sorry. I know I'll never go back to a 427 SO.
Good luck with whatever you deceide.

Oh My GOD!!!!!!!
Clois,
I just found this post!!! I am so sorry to see the pictures of your grenaded engine, but when did it actually happen?? I hope you didn't do this at our SCAT event !! I don't know who you are going to have build your next engine, but we have a pretty well known builder down here with a storefront in Plano that has been building some AWESOME FE's that seem able to live in the higher rpm ranges.
Remember, I also enjoy taking my car on the track when I can, but I have also learned not to listen to someone else about how well I am, or am not running. I leave a 6500 pill in my MSD and so far it has kept me, and my equipment safe from harm.
I do wish you and your family a Merry Christmas, and I am glad we moved the TCC event in 2005 back a month so will have time to get back on the road and join us again in March!
Merry Christmas, my friend!!!
John Russell and family

Clois,
Don't listen to Cranky. Just remember you can never do that much damage to an engine, if you remained a waxer.

Yep, were going back with a S.O. we are just going to be a little more careful this time. Routine maintenance, and we are going to have to cut down on our track time this year. I guess I will have to wait another year to do THE GLEN.
Plans are to do one or two more track years then completely restore the finish and become a waxer. Nothing wrong with small blocks or waxers.
Clois
John Russel I did do it at the SCAT meet. TMS sure is a fast race track.

Clois,
Not a bad idea of restoring when you get tired of track time. For me I'll restore when I get too old for track time. I figure when I hit 70 I'll go for someting with a top, I should be ready to give up the Cobra nonsense by then.

The new motor
Listen, I talk with Clois almost everday and let me tell you he is very excited about his new motor. I Know this is not what he planned but he is having a great time thinking about his new project. I was helping Clois take this motor out of his car when we came across these beautiful renditions of artistic motor works. You all should have seen his face when he saw that rod for the first time!!!! Do you laugh or cry? We just opened another beer and sat in silence for awhile.
I only have one more question for the the group: Will we all feel this sorry for Clois when he is kicking our a$$ around the track next year?
Merry Christmas and Happy holidays to all my friends on the forum!!

THINK
I was at the mini-nats at Sears Point earlier this year and I was parked next to 1966 427 S/C CSX car. It had a dymo lable on the tach that looked about as old as the car. It read simply...
THINK
It took me a few minutes to really get the meaning.

Dean,
You're trying to psyc me out already.
Dean's also building a S.O. and he should have more HP than me with his Blue Thunder Heads and 2.25 Manley valves, etc., but he has to get around me first.
This will be fun!

??
The Cam you used is a for a lower revving engine with it's short duration. Running it up to 6800 has to run it out of steam. Also, did Comp give you those old style barbell lifters. They are not only heavy but ancient technology that went out with high button shoes. It would be little $$ difference to go with more modern better breathing parts.

Thanks guys, those examples helped me to finally understand why, when I attended R&G, all the cars with big blocks were so slow...the drivers were too preoccupied with "THINK"ing.
To be fair I must say I was doing a good bit of thinking as well. I had thoughts like: "How could I, a rookie, with dare I say... a SBC, have whooped all the BB cars like it was "NO BIG DEAL"?
Merry Chrismas
