Hey Tony,
I agree the 66 is a good looking car but my all time vette favorite is still the 63. You mentioned traction was not great on the 3rd generation cars but not sure I agree with you 100%. After the weight loss program that drops finished curb weight into the 2400 pound range and spring/suspension changes it comes back to the tires limiting traction. The IRS rear is not the best choice for drag racing but with bolt on suspension upgrades becomes a great overall design.
The 1984 to 96 or 4th generation corvette suspension is an improved design over the earlier cars but aftermarket C3 parts are not only reasonably priced but outperform stock C4's.
Shelby did pitch his dream to GM and was turned down for fear of conflicting with the Vette's very profitable market share for GM. Think somebody is looking back and saying... Damn--- woulda, coulda, shoulda! Who knows what would have happened but the competition and maybe the (I'll show you ) history is fantastic as is.
