5 SPd Transmission for FE
I have a 68 Shelby Convert with a 550 HP / 600 Ft Lb Torque 427 (454). Gears are 3.50's. Currently Toploader close ratio 4 spd. Considering a 5 spd. Can anyone suggest which to go with given this HP / Torque rating. How much will it cost? How much time to change over? Will be used on a track / possibly Big Bend Open Road Race. Rpms at 100 mph are approx 5000.

I am not sure that a Tremac will fit in a Mustang without some serious alterations.

Necessary wide ratio gears cost about $500-$600, got mine from "southern gear' in Atlanta. Driven hard and no failure ye

Someone on www.fordfe.com has just went through this. I think it was close to a month ago so try a search. He installed a Tremec 600 into a 67 or 68 mustang. There were some issues but nothing major as I remember. G.

I am running a Tremec TKO behind my 428, with 3.50 rear end. Runs about 1400 RPM in 5th at about 80 mph. No problems containing the power as of yet...

A Tremec TKO-600 has the same bolt pattern as a wide case toploader so your all set there. The issue is with the length of the input shaft. The TKO-600's ia 3/4" longer than the toploader. In order to install the Tremec tranny behind an FE you will need a spacer. McCleod makes one for a cost of approx. $150.00. The other option is to remove the input shaft, shorten it and reinstall it. Forte's parts connection does the input shaft shortening modificaiton if you want to go that route. Keeep in mind that in you use the spacer, your drive shaft will need to be shorted. Oh, by the way the Tremec torque ratings are as follows:
3550 - 350lb-ft (3.27 1st, .64 OD)
3550 TKO - 450lb-ft (3.27 1st, .68 OD)
3550 TKO II - 500lb-ft (3.27 1st, .83 OD)
TKO-500 - 500lb-ft (3.27 1st, .68 or .83 OD)
TKO-600 - 600lb-ft (2.87 1st, .64 or .83 OD)
These numbers are based on a 3400# car for what its worth.

I heard that Tremec was producing a shortened input shaft but had no confirmation until now, thnaks Dreamer. I don'y know the cost, but I would think that the spacer is an easier solution. However, if you are running a solid rear axle, that 3/4" might make the drive shaft too short so your only real option is the shortened input shaft. Now if you have IRS there is no issue with the drive shaft length.

One option would be to switch the rear gears to 3.07, and change to a wide ratio toploader. You won't need a 5 speed then.

Shelbytexas,
Find a copy of last weekend's Horsepower TV. They did the exact install. You do have cut part of the floor support for the top of the transmission to clear.

I'd probably buy a TKO, and cut up the floor boards, tunnel to make it fit. ? shifter, ? driveshaft, ? speedometer modifications, ? anything else
You could have David Kee rebuild the toploader, with wide ratio parts , ? $800-1000, and install new rear gears ? about $400 -500. You wouldn't have to buy a new shifter either, speedometer hook up OK, drive shaft the same, etc.
