Default 11.99 1/4 mile with 9.8 on PUMP GAS!

Well the new motor is not quite "dialed in", but I'm on the right track. 11.99 at 118 mph shifting at 5800 rpm (should be 6200).

New motor:
9.8 to 1 C.R.
282S Comp Cam, flat tappet solid
600 cfm twin Holleys
Very "street" friendly and gets about 10+ mpg.

Old motor:
12.5 to 1
Solid Roller Cam
660 cfm twin Holleys
NOT "street" freindly in ANY way and got about 6 mpg.
I ran the 1/4 in 11.90 at 121 mph.

I'm shifting early (5800) because I'm still "dialing in" the new motor for timing and jetting, not quite ready for prime time yet.

George Anderson, Gessford Machine, worked VERY closely with me on "blue printing" this engine. Piston height and Compression Ratio were HUGE issues. The idea was to find "hidden horse power" by utliizing the "quench" factor. I would say George really nailed it with the overall "specs". A totally "streetable" engine that pulls as strong as the old "race ready" engine before. AND runs on 92 octane pump gas!

Assembling an engine is one thing, the REAL trick is "blue printing" the engine! My hats off to George, WOW!

Not bad for a non-385 series powered Cobra...

3.31 rear gear (Jag IRS) with a CLOSE ratio top loader. First gear on a close ratio is quite high compared to a wide ratio.

Close Ratio: 2.32,1.69.1.29.1.0
Wide Ratio: 2.78,1.93,1.36,1.0

So first gear shift point is around 60 mph. That TALL gear is a good thing as far as traction goes. Tires? The BIG Letter Goodyears, there pretty sticky compared to a lot of others. Fiday night at the track is "practice night", they don't use any resin on the track and traction WAS a serious problem.

I got just a little bit sideways when I nailed 2nd and pulled away from that Camaro.

Do you have any dyno numbers on the new engine? For what it's worth, your quarter mile results are very close to what I ran in 1975 with my Cobra (12.2 at 116). I was running 3.77 gears and Firestone road race tires, and traction in first was nearly zip. I did catch that Camaro 'though.

Dam,

That Camero gets around don't he. If he keeps traveling he may find a Cobra he can beat.
Great times and speed Ernie. With a little more practice and tuning you will really be getting good at drag racing.

I've never had it on a dyno yet. I built it at my house and stuffed it under it the hood (tight fit by the way). I need to make some final adjustments and some tuning and then I WILL be taking it to the dyno.

My "game plan" for this engine was to more or less "duplicate" what was available "back in the day". 1964 Iron high riser heads and matching 2X4 intake with a flat tappet cam. With the exception of the custom pistons designed for zero deck height this IS what the original Cobras had in 1965.

NOTE:
Original piston height specs were .030 below deck (427 Side Oiler) and the word "quench" did not yet exist. Of course compression ratio's and octane was higher back then. 10+ to 12+ C.R. being pretty common. I have to deal with 92 octane, and the motor STILL rocks!
