As much stroke as possible!
Regardless of the bore size, I like to go with as much stroke as possible. In the Seventies, my street car at one point was a 427 block with a 352 crank and topped with Tunnel Port heads. Was a high winder but it was lacking that low end grunt that's so common with the longer stroke engines.
The stroke in my current Fe is 4.410" which uses BBC rod journal sizes and a smaller base circle camshaft to make it all work. The best bang for the buck for my customers is the SCAT 4.250" stroke crankshaft and it'll work in just about any Fe block for a significant cubic inch increase. The availability of 390 blocks makes this a great engine build but the use of a 427 block is all the better as flow around the intake valve is greatly enhanced by lieu of the larger bore.
