Did all FE blocks have cast numbers?
I bought an FE sight unseen in Michigan....Trularin was kind enough to pick it up for me. It was in a '78 Ford F700 (not original engine -- had been transplanted) dump truck. It's got a 361 tag on the valve cover....the valve covers straddle the intake and head, so I know it's an FE...but Tru can't find a cast number anywhere on the block. He did say it had the vertical ribs on the block....so I guess it was a service block.
The valve covers have D7 (I think) cast numbers....so I take it this is a 77-78 engine.
Tru did find a mold number on the block....but he can't find the block cast number itself on the opposite side.
Did all blocks have cast numbers, or were some cast without them?

Not all FE's have casting #"s! The over the counter sevice blocks from Ford didnt have casting marks but they do have the ribs on either side of the block. "JMO"

It does sound like a 70's service block. You can tell by the date code. The 70's blocks had two dots under the first number in the date code. There was also a run of blocks with no casting numbers from 68 I think but they had no ribs on the side. G.

Hi,
Just re-read the Email you sent me a couple of months back.
Mine turned out to be late 69 which fits into the above.
Any idea why they didn't put the normal casting nos on?

My block has no casting number or ribs. It does have a date code 8k23. Also 66-427 on back with a big C cast into it. Also an X in the lifter valley with 47 under it. The front has 68 352 on it. Don't know if it has 428 cast in the freeze plug hole.
What does the big C on back and the X in the valley mean? Anyone know?

The "X" debate is still out to lunch. I'd lean more to a HD block casting that high nickle content of the "X" mark in the lifter galley. The "C" in most cases represents an CJ/SCJ block application.

No... In the interest of stirring up @#$% I would say the best FE blocks have no casting numbers.
X blocks have the thickest cylinder walls... Just weigh one, or my case pick one up... C blocks have reinforced crank saddles. Some X blocks have both...
