Does this sound feasible?
I usually trust Desktop Dyno when I contemplate an engine build. My last engine dyno'd at 484. Desktop Dyno predicted 490. Pretty close.
This time with my FE build, I'm trying some different options....Y'all check this out and see if it makes sense to you guys.
4.130" Bore
3.78" Stroke
406"
Cast iron heads, 2.09" intake valve, 1.65" exhaust valve.
10.5:1 CR
750cfm carb on a Edelbrock Performer RPM dual plane manifold.
Comp Cams mechanical roller cam. 243/.645 with a 110 LSA. Retarded 4 degrees.
I'm getting 513hp at 6000 revs...494 lb-ft at 4500 revs.
Does this sound about right to you guys?
If so, is it wise to use a roller cam on an FE block?

What's cool is that the same engine with a Comp Cams solid flat tappet cam (248/.605/108 LSA) and a set of 2.190" intake valves and 1.70" exhaust valves along with a single plane intake shows 570 hp @ 6500 and 503 lb-ft @ 5000.....
Seems like the single plane intake is a big key to a lot of this....

The key to it is good machine work with a straight round cylinder, good ring seal and then good flowing heads. I feel that the Edelbrock Performer RPM is the right intake for the application and a camshaft with about 244/252 at .050 and about .620 lift on a 110 lobe seperation would work great in the real world. The Holley 750 should be about right and they have a 750HP with vacume secondaries that we have some real good luck with. I also wonder if the desk top dyno takes into account the fact that the camshaft gets smaller than advertised when the lash is set. I would think with a solid roller and a good set if iron heads with the 2.09 and 1.66 valves that you could get on the 500 to 525 range. Good luck, Keith Craft

Thanks Keith. The price of those roller cams are sure a shock though....hehehe
Keith, I've heard many differing opinions about using a roller cam in an older FE block. Any reservations about that?

If you do a search for "rooler" you will find a long thread that was a great discussion on the roller set ups. It is hard to find sometimes because Clois spelled roller wrong. I think you will find your answers there.

I think I'd be better off to save the $400 and gain the reliability and longevity of a flat tappet cam.....all I"m doing is street stuff....
I was really hoping to see 500hp out of this engine though.....I was hoping a good cam would get me there. Maybe I'll have KC massage the heads a little bit.
I'm showing 486 with a Comp flat tappet cam.....I was showing 510 with the mechanical roller that KC was recommending. I think 24 hp is worth not having to go through some of the heartaches and teardowns that some of the other members have went through.

I built a 428 (.60 over) Solid flat tappet, 600 lift, 252/260 duration @ .50 110 lobe sep. Mighty Demon, Victor Jr. intake, Iron heads, ported/polised, 209/165 valves. Just re-tuned, on a chassis dyno. 485 hp @ 5.85 rpm., at the rear wheels. Likes to idle apx. 1,000 rpm
I'm very happy the way the motor runs & sounds. Good for the street & strip.
