Checker Auto Parts, standard issue Ford OEM. It worked fine on my 12.5 to 1 FE and still works fine on my new 9.8 to 1 FE.
I'm not sure why just about everyone buys some kind of custom or geared starter. Whats up with that?

From what I understand, the full size starters don't fit a lot of brands of replicas. I know the CSX and Kirkham guys say they don't clear the frame either.

I think the geared ones sound better too. That's important.

Gessford suggests the CVR Protorque Starter and has it at a good price. I haven't had any problems out of it.

I got the Protorque starter from summit... It spins quieter engauges quicker and starts faster tan any oem style starter I've ever had... It's about 1/2 the weight too.

We use the CVR on our Iron FE's and the Shelby block cast side dimension requires a smaller starter...or it hits the block.

This is a Hitachi style
There are several vendors that offer this type or a clone of it.

This is a good topic and a subject that is receiving great responses from the members showing their experiences....
These images were from an engine we received where the customer had purchased a starter (Powermaster 9506) that doesn't work correctly.
Notice where it has contact with the Shelby Block Plug not allowing the starter to be fully installed.

Power Master has since fixed these problem with turning the starter a little. We have machined a small notch in the block where this starter will work for them. Power Master said they had a lot of race customers that wanted it that way to get out of the way of there headers on there Mustangs. Now they have both available for the Cobra and the Mustangs with headers. I believe they all work pretty well from what I have seen. Good luck, Keith
