Roush Engine---worth it?
I am looking to get a cobra--not sure where yet, but superformance has the Roush engine as an option--427, 550 HP.
Do you all know what it would cost, is it worth it, can I get it back when I sell it? Any pros and cons?
Thanks,
Tom

FMS makes a very nice Windsor for about a third of the cost.

Thanks! If cash was not a real concern, but building a truely dream Cobra was the goal---is the reputation of the Roush engine a big plus? If not, then what would the optimum engine be for an awesome Cobra?

The Roush motor gets the "oohs and ahhs" everywhere we take it. They do have the benefit of "a registry" and also each motor comes with a 2 year warranty and the actual dyno sheet. If you comparison shop with other well known builders, as soon as you add in the dyno sheet and the 2 year warranty you are close in price anyway.
Another nice thing about the Roush motors is they come complete from aircleaner to oil pan ... none of the others really come this way (atleast as they are advertised).
That being said, we are just as happy using the Ford Racing motors too.
If it's a budget thing I would suggest putting more money in the car than the motor...
Give us a visit sometime, we are not that far...

I struggled with my engine choice for quite some time. I was going back and forth between Roush and Keith Craft. In the end, I went with Keith for a 427w. Too soon to tell for sure, but they just called with my bench dyno results yesterday: 579HP @ 5800 RPM and 609 LB-FT of torque @ 4500 RPM. He says he will stand behind his work, and I have no reason to doubt that. He and Tony in his shop worked with both my installer and I to make sure we were comfortable with their process. To be fair, I also spent quite a bit of time with Todd Andrews from Roush and he was very good as well. In the end, I could get more bang for my buck with Keith. People go on about the Roush name for resale, but seems like to me that Keith has every bit as good (if not better) of a reputation within the circles in which one of these cars would be resold. Just my humble opinion and two cents worth. Best of luck whichever way you go...
Doug

Since you are posting this in the FE forum, am going to assume that you think the Roush 427 is an actual 427FE, like an original Cobra motor. If you are not aware, the Roush 427 is a stroked 351 Windsor motor. Just fyi.

Doug,
If you don't mind my asking, from which dealer did you end up buying your coupe and who is your installer?
Thanks

I'm surprised I have'nt seen this comment, so here goes:
I think you are paying a lot for the Roush name, not nessarily getting better hardware. I have seen numberous post over the yrs of people having mechanical problems and warranty problems with both Roush and Ford crates. Warranties are worthless if your racing/redlining the engine. Look at the lfine print.
I think you are better served with a motor built to your requirements by a good builder. A 6K street cruising motor is a different animal than a 7k track eng that you want to flog for years with no trouble. It takes bucks to make a hi-pro live a long time. Any crate engine is a tradoff off of bucks vs quality that you had no input into. Big corps are is business to maximize profits, not to provide you the best motor. My humble opinon.
I think there are alot better engines and more bang for the buck out there
