Default FE Starter suggestions?

Well, went out this morning to drive the Cobra to work...hit the starter and ZIIINNNNGGG! Motor no crankie. Went to work, got home and did the simple stuff, still wouldn't crank. Pulled the starter out and (OH MY GOD!) the NOSE (pinion gear) fell out of the housing and went into the bell housing behind the clutch. I'm jumping through my a$$hole by now, thinking about pulling the tunnel, tranny and bell housing for this piece of crap! Got the bright idea to get a flexible shaft magnet from PepBoy, and Voila, pulled it out in less than ten minutes of fishing! Whew!

Anyway, a circlip broke and allowed the pinion shaft to disengage from the drive/reduction gear. This was a McLeod starter, worked fine for 4 years, and I think I can repair it by replacing the pinion shaft (it's a little buggered up anyway) for about $60. Question: What brand starter do you guys like? Should I get another McLeod or a different brand? Or just fix it?

Default Starter

An original works fine. I never had a problem and they are fairly easy to come by rebuilt for very little.

Ken,
I've been using the CVR #5049 for a couple of years.
Works great out here, even on those 100+ degree days.

Checkers Auto, or was it NAPA? Genuine remanufactured OEM FE starter works fine for me. Got a lifetime gaurentee on that baby too!

Had been running a Hitachi until last weekend when it crapped out. Went to Autozone and bought a DURALAST for $32.00 with a lifetime guarantee. About 5 pounds heavier than my HIGH TORQUE MINI but it works fine and didn't cost me $250.00.

Same here on my new Shelby Aluminum 427. If you only want to do it once, use a CVR ProTorque Maximum. It will cost more, but the confidence is worth it.

I should have assumed so. I'll give George a call.
I have a new McLeod mini high torque but, it has only two ways to mount. Either way, it hits the engine or the frame. I would have to drill the starter to suit my needs and I don't know if I want to do that ?
Thanks

I would really appreciate it if one of you guys using a CVR starter, to look up this ebay number.....#7990959349. This seller has a store. It's a CVR, don't think it's the maximum but, the part number is #5049. It's selling for $154.99
Thanks,
kev

Ken,

My experience has been that things like that don't happen in Texas .

Rick, you're right, in Texas you guys just twist off bolts that require a complete dismantling to repair, huh? After smoking up the neighborhood for months and killing God knows how many endangered species...

Thanks for all the replies, good suggestions (except you, Rick ).
I'm about to try a stock unit (price, availability, etc.), and either send my McLeod unit to them for a rebuild or buy the part and do it myself, then I'll have a STEENKIN' BACKUP!!!
