What type of ignition did these come with in the 60's?
Dual points? Does anyone still do that?

I wish mine had dual point, just like the originals had. But I bowed low to the 'technology' gurus and went with MSD (I'm ashamed to say).
I bet Ron (Computerworks) is running a dual point distributor in HIS 427 side oiler. Being perhaps the most accurately detailed build, like EVER.

Not to many people want to deal with dwell and feeler gauges anymore. If you want to have the look, use the housing but put a pertronix module in. It becomes an electronic high output with the look of points.

Yes, dual point, with no vaccum advance. A select few cars had Ford's transistorized 427 ignition upgrade added as well.
I am using an original number correct 427 distributor (rebuilt and curved by Faron Rhodes from the FordFE site), but I decided to add the Pertronix pickup inside it for no points maintenance.

ahh yes ... them old points.
I still have my trusty Radio Shack dwell meter that I built back in 1965. It worked the last time I used it ... LAST YEAR.

I just converted from dual-points in December. I have been tweeking points/dwell/timing prior to that. Now I have the Pertronics module. Sure makes life a lot easier and the car starts a bit faster. You would never know unless you remove that cap. I still have the dual-point setup in my trunk just in case my Pertronics dies.

I had one back in '63 and they used dual-point with centrifugal advance. I currently have a '66 sideoiler in my cobra and also am running the original FOMOCO dual point setup. Have had it for almost 3 years and have not had any trouble at all. It fires and starts on the first hit and it'll rip your head off under full acceleration just like they are supposed to do.
I don't think it is that hard to find experienced mechanics who know how to setup the dual point system. Most anyone who has built high performance or race engines should be able to help you out with setting dwell on the dual points. I'm sure a tune up manual is available to get you started if you want to tackle it yourself.
"Keep it original, man!" Once it goes modern it is difficult to go original.
Good luck, Bob

my car had points in it when I bought it in 2002... They really have no place in a modern high performance engine. A good CD ignition will gain you 5-15 hp and your car will be less prone to misfire and will run cleaner, start and rev faster than a points system. It is the cheapest easiest most beneficial thing I have done to my car. You will notice a difference immediately.
Any 12 year old with a screwdriver and a dwell meter can set up a dual point distributor, be sure to use an advance timing light or distributor machine to dial in solid advance curve. You will want to to replace the advance springs in any case. 40 year old springs are weak and will not do what you want them to so when you need them to do it.
