How will it sound?
Since I changed from a flat tappet cam to a solid roller, I'm curious as to how my engine will sound with the new cam....
It's a custom grind solid roller from KC. 248/254 duration, .675/.682 lift with a 110 LSA.
I'm dying to start on this build, but my block is still being machined. So now I just have to sit and use my imagination.
Just curious as to what this thing will sound like when it's idling....thumpy? Rough?

I've been sitting with my imagination for over a year since receiving my KC FE motor. I went with a hydro roller set up for the maintenance factor, so I'm not expecting as much of a lump as what I think you're going to end up with, with the 110 LSA and solid rollers.
Maybe this will help;

Brent,
I am running a 607 lift solid lifter cam w/ similar duration but my seperation is only 108. Idle is rough and I usually have my idle set at about 1000 RPM's and at idle I am running pretty rich but the fuel mix is just about right for wot.
Good luck with your run in.
Clois

Clois, I ditched the flat tappet cam and went with a solid roller.
With the same durations, I think a solid roller would be a little milder compared to a solid flat tappet cam....

Brent,
I just pulled that off the website that had a "Cobra Kit" sound file. As far as I know, it could be anything, so it's not really an answer to your question. I just thought it might keep you entertained until you fire yours up. http://www.classicchambered.com

Bykins,
Unless you changed the compression ratio, there should be little difference in the sound. With a longer duration cam, the car may rock a little more while sitting at a traffic light, though! That's a good thing, NOBODY wants to race you.

RS,
New build. I don't have anything to compare the new cam to.
I was just hoping someone with a big block and roller cam with around the same specs would speak up and let me know what to expect.
Will it be a lopey idle? Will it have a thump? Will it be radical?
Wasn't intended to be a hard question....
Help me out here Tru.

Dear Lord, Please allow me to hear this engine just once to know that there is someone just as nuts as I am.
Very radical. I think you may be able to idle in the 1000 to 1200 RPM range...as the car rocks with each loaping surge. I thought mine was high at .550, but .675? That's radical.
Yes, it will loap heavy and when you get just above the idle circuit, it will sound like cooking eggs ( a term we used to use a while ago ).
Send me all of the relative information so I can take an insurance policy out on your butt when you launch this thing for the first time.

They make some nice sidepipe inserts. I've had the chambered exhaust on a new LS1 Camaro with long tube headers, and was very pleased.

See "A Good Read" in All Cobra Talk, I think he describes it just about right!

Blynk:
Mine is a KC build. Custom Solid Roller: 262/268 duration @ .050; .651/.670 lift with 110.0 separation which is relatively close to what you are going to be experiencing. Let me put it to you this way; in order to "talk" within 10 feet of the vehicle, you will have to stand in front, or in back of the car. Standing anywhere on the sides of the car requires a Marine Corps D.I. presentation. I am not being facitious one iota. It idles at 1200 in neutral and drops to 800 under load in gear (Race Prepped AOD). If you have a radio in the car; it just became useless. Passenger discussions are no longer in the equation. With a stick; you can idle at 800. The lope is more of a smooth, authoritative "rumble", not that stalling kind of lope and the sound is serious deep. On the downside: throttle response to 7000 is instantaneous coupled with a ton of torque and you can smokem through the first 3 gears. The first time the car breaks loose in 2nd or 3rd gear, you may wet your pants and "fear" will now be an integral part of your driving experience. (BTW: mines a porker at 3200lbs.) That fear had better give you a new found respect for your machine. Remember the word "fear"; it may save your life.

A solid roller sounds inviting but, longevity issues concern me...........

Perry, with upgrades in technology, roller lifters are lasting a lot longer than they used to. Comp makes some pressure fed solid roller lifters now....that are living upwards around 20000 miles I believe.
It's gonna take me a lifetime to put 20000 miles on my Cobra....so the extra power I'll get from a solid roller is well worth it.
