Default Fan thermostatic sensor location

originally my 427 S/O had the sensor for the fan control installed in a "'splice" tube that was installed in the middle of the lower radiator hose. Looks like the sensor is a 7/8 diameter thread with 2 male electrical connectors sticking out the top.

I want to replace the lower rubber hose with a braided line and am trying to figure out where I can install this sensor, or ideas on replacing the sensor and using something into the intake or one of the probe sensors that slide into the radiator core.

I have a 1966 aluminum police interceptor intake and trying to decide where I would access the water jacket on that and what size and type of sensor I'd need.

Appreciate any ideas.

I have used a Bosche fan switch from VW/Porsche, the thread size is 22mm. It is in thelower portion of the RH tank. It has worked flawlesly for many years. I use it to ground the relay for the fan.

Default Which port to use?

So, if I use one of the ports on my intake, which do I use? Any idea if any of these are ports in to the water jacket?

I'm not sure, with the exception of the one on top of the radiator hose oulet that the temprature probe is in, the only other I would hazard a guess might be the blue one closest to the distributor. The 2 others are definately vacuum. BTW check the accelerator pump diaphram on your carb, it looks like it's leaking.

Thanks Rick - actually that is oil from a leaky valve cover gasket. Picture is old so that's cleaned up now. Looks like the port right next to the distributor will work. Ended up taking the surge tank off to paint so I could look inside and see where the ports went. Now have to wire it up.

I have installed the sensor in the water pump. There is one plug you can take out and fit the sensor in there. Many are available with all sorts of threads and temperature settings. Mine is set at 180ºF.

Default Weld a bung into the lower pipe

That is what I did and it works great.

I use the one over the T'Stat, but I have a Boss 351.

Just make sure you make a good thread seal and it is electrically connected to the block, manifold or frame.

Looks like I'm going to go with the port right next to the distributor. I also figure that will have the fan operating based on the water temp in the engine as it's exiting and match up to the temp gauge.
