During a clutch replacement recently, I decided to convert to a McLeod aluminum flywheel on my 427 stroker (428 crank). We noticed that the weight on the new flywheel didn't match the same position on the old, but bolted it up anyway.
Needless to say, the engine was way out of balance. I had the old one resurfaced, remounted, and everything was fine. It is very important to make sure the flywheel is properly indexed to the rest of the rotating assembly.
I also realize an alternative would have been to "match balance" or index the new to the old flywheel, but decided to just stick with what had worked so well in the past.
