I need FE cam retainer plate bolts
Anyone know where to get some? I take that you could use an off the shelf bolt somewhere...just as long as it clears the timing gear, right?

Brent,
Are you talking about those 1/4 X 28 or 5/16 X 28 phillips head bolts? If so I have seen engines that use a six point low profile bolt to hold the retainer.

Yes...the phillips head screws that hold the retainer plate on. I may have to look for a thin head bolt.....

www.dscmotorsport carries ARP bolts for this purpose that have been clearanced. The website says they are 7/16-14 x 3/4. Seems a little large....I was thinking they were 1/4 or 5/16 myself.

Flat head countersunk internal hex head machine screws work real well, they are generally made of pretty good material. You may need to countersink the holes in the plate itself, but the finished installation will turn out real nice, with plenty of clearance. This is what I used myself. They are available at many hardware and farm impement type stores.

Permanent? Would I be able to get them back out if need be without shearing them?

Sure, the red Locktite is just higher strength. I use it exclusively. If needed a little heat like from a propane torch for a moment will release the Locktite, but usually it is not needed, just a little additional effort. I just like the additional insurance of the "Red" Locktite. For that matter I use it on all chassis & engine fasteners except Rods, Mains, Head Studs/Bolts. Getting the screws out is not a concern.

I use button head allen bolts.
Easy to get - at least around here.
Maybe I need to add them to my site for a few bucks/set...

Button head allen bolts are carried by most hardware stores.

Especially when using button head bolts, I've got to agree with RedCSX1's insistance on using blue loctite. Button Heads have a smaller hex in them, making it easier to deform the bolthead when removing them.
On standard grade 8 or better bolts I use red loctite, as it's easier to remove than you realize. However, the blue stuff would probably work as well.
My 2 cents,
Dan
