Default FE pilot bushing/bearing

Might be putting my motor in soon, and I had a question about the pilot bushing.... I am using a Tremec trans on the back of my 390. Do I still use a standard OEM toploader FE pilot bushing, or is there a special one I need to get? Also, anyone have a preference between a bushing and a bearing?

Same bushing.

And I prefer the bushing over the bearing. A bushing can wear out, but a bearing can have a catastrophic failure which doesn't end up very pretty.

Most FE's I have seen run the standard Brass Bushing. That is what I am running with my Toploader and Dean Lampe ran with his TKO 600.

I'm running a bushing also with my Toploader. Bearings seem to fit a little more tighter....and I think that if your bellhousing isn't perfectly aligned, it could complicate things worse.

Please - do tell Clois or Buzz. I just installed a TKO and used a bearing. Am I setting myself up for trouble?

The only time the bearing/bushing does anything besides keep the front of the trans shaft in line is when you have your foot on the clutch. Otherwise the front trans shaft and crankshaft are turning at the same speed. I personally see little difference between the two, but I use the bearing.

You can't drop the tranny under the car and install it with the engine in?

in a SPF, you have to pull the trans tunnel to get the trans out, or you pull the engine. Since I have some oil leak issues again to fix and some gasket work..and now I am a pro at pulling that bad boy, the engine is the option I am gonna take. but man, am I hacked at myself! a few days and good as new. I am just glad that I remembered before the trans exploded.

Buzz, I got mine from Napa. I asked for a pilot bushing for a 69 Mustang.

I think ALL the FE's use the same bushing. But definitely if you asked for ANY 390 bushing it'd be right.

I am running a sealed bearing. Keep in mind that these are not high milage cars! Also the majority of auto manufactures use a bearing currently. But you have to run one or the other.

Having a hard time locating a pilot bearing for a 427 FE (most parts stores only carry the bushing). Does anyone have a part # for the bearing type?

I used a Federal-Mogul 303SS. Sealed ball bearing with metal shields.

FYI...It ended up being Napa part 6303-2ZJ (manufactured by SKF).
