It CAN be done, but it will likely be an expensive project. Jim Dove bought
the cammer tooling from Ford after production ceased and has cast new
cammer heads in times past. I don't know if he plans to do any more, most
likely he would only do another run of them if the demand is there. Robert
Pond can supply a block with the oil return mods already done. Other bits
and pieces such as water pumps, camshaft blanks, camshaft drivetrain parts,
cam followers, front covers, etc. are generally available from assorted
vendors when they have sufficient orders to do a run of them. Dennis
at DSC Motorsport can probably point you in the right direction if you want
to do a cammer project.

The original chain drive was good for 8000 rpm, even higher. You gonna run your new SOHC to 8 plus? Maybe once or twice, maybe, but I wouldn't! I'd be scared to death something might break, might as well run the chain, certainly good enough for that 6000 rpm chip I'd put in.

Hi there,

There was a new Mustang on display at the Turkey Rod Run with a SOHC engine. From the sticker it appears to be a factory option from Ford.

Very nice doctored window sticker,LOL. Since they refer to one model of the Mod motor as a SOHC, it is and option. My apprentice thought I was talking about the Mod motor when we were discussing the SOHC motor (the REAL 1 ) last week. He was really impressed when he knew what it was, young'uns, whatcha gonna do?

I read that sticker as having a 2004 date. How old is the car?

Wink cammer option.....

Ford no longer has the tooling to produce SOHC FE's, imagine trying to make
something like that OBD II and emissions compliant! That particular Mustang
is probably a non-registered "trailer queen," it would probably leave the tail-pipe
sniffers at emissions inspection with a foul taste.

Im sorry- what a moron I am. I just realized when looking at the ebay ad- they were boss 429 valve covers, not SOHC covers. Still doesnt justify $1500 for them, either one or both. Sorry for the mix-up. At any rate, those SOHC valve covers look nice, and I wouldnt be surprised if he got the $400 for 'em.

It didn't say if that is bare heads or with valves and springs. Wish they would have posted some flow numbers. Must be pretty good for a mild street engine to put out 600 hp on pump gas.

At 2.5 times the cost of a set of good wedge heads, it is still going to get costly, by the time you get all the rest of the parts.

They have to pay for the investment of the molds and developement, before they make any money. Can they sell more at a lower price and make it up on volume? On an engine that was discontinued nearly 40 years ago, I don't know. I just know at $3000 complete it would be a no brainer yes for me over a wedge, as long as they didn't kill me on the other parts. At that price who wouldn't go hemi? They would have 95% of the FE head market, but how big is it?
