Default anyone running a 482 stroker?

i was going back and forth about building a new side oiler but using the stock stroke, i lost a bunch of bids on different cranks on e bay, then keith kraft said they have steel 4.25 stroke cranks for around 1,000.00. so now i am thinking i would be foolish to use a 40 year old part, in such an expensive build. what would the recipe be to build a 482 that would be streetable?, i will be running mass flo fuel inj with the victor fe manifold, 42 pound injectors should i run flat top or dished pistons, what is the difference between the edelbrock cyl heads the 72 cc seem to have the smaller valves and the 76 cc have the larger valves, ketih said his carb cams work well with the mass flo fuel inj. just looking for more input before i start buying parts.

I am planning on going with a 482 stroker from Keith Craft as well. I have heard a lot of good referals on the engine setup. I also would like to do the fuel injection that you are talking about. I'll be watching this thread with interest to see what you find out. I'm not set up to build my own and so that is why I plan on have Keith build mine.

I just ordered a Pond 482 shortblock from Keith Craft. I also ordered it un-assembled. Why? Because I want a hobby. And I can't afford a Kirkham yet anyway. I really don't subscribe to the commonly held belief that one needs some sort of super-natural, Jedi skill to put an FE together. Many folks on this forum have successfully done it, though some have failed spectacularly. Read ALL the available literature. Steve Christ's book is mandatory. The Engine Builder's Handbook by Tom Monroe is also excellent as is Engine Blueprinting by Rick Voegelin. Read every post, from beginning to end in the FE section of this site to learn about the pitfalls. Fordfe.com has members that have forgotten more about the FE than most normal humans will ever know. Ask questions, make no assumptions, measure twice........

That being said, I may fail spectaculary. I think it's also important to be able to afford to fail. If you can't afford to fail, utilizing a professional is probably prudent.

wrench87 Check out survivalmotorsports with Barry R. Has a good deal on rotation assemblies, balanced and ready to drop in a machined block. He has run in the HR engine masters and done very well with the FE. Gessford Machine would be another one to talk to about a motor, George or Neil. Be careful with that Mass-flo FI system. You may want to look into a TWM setup and F.A.S.T ECU. I run a FAST and very happy with the system. Rick L.

You will not go wrong by letting Keith build your motor!!!!!!!!!!!
He is cheaper than building it yourself and it's done right the first time. You will tear up parts, buy the wrong parts, etc. etc

I'm curious about this subject too. Does anyone pay attention to rod ratios? I've read that a rod ratio of approximately 1.6 is recommended, but the higher the better. I'm not at the point of building an engine just yet, but I was wondering if the rod ratio of a 482 is desirable or undesirable? How about compared to a stock stroke or somewhere in the middle. While I understand everyone is after torque for the street, if you run your car at the track, wouldn't a smaller engine be snappier?

Rod-

The rod ratio for a 482 is 1.57. While rod ratio has ramifications for piston side loads, dwell time at TDC etc, etc, I personally didn't give it a second thought. I went with 482 because it's an off-the-shelf stroke crank and standard bore. (Bigger bores=bigger dollars). And everyone here that has a 482 seems to be thrilled with it. That clinched it for me.

Anyway, cam choice and rear end ratio will dictate the personality of the motor way more than the rod ratio, IMHO.

Two more questions. Does the longer stroke make the 482 a less desirable engine for track events than say a stock stroke 427 S/O? Also, can you put the 482 crank and rods into a vintage 427 S/O block or is an aftermarket block required?

Gorgeous engine Undy. I wish I could have it.

i was looking for info on the 482 pro's and con's rather then who i should have build it, i dont have 16k to have some one build my motor. at this time i am going to start buying parts, when i built my factory five befor i even had my kit i had built my motor at work, and had a a spare bedroom full of new parts its more fun this way , so far keith is the only one nice enough to return my e mails so he will get my buisness.

I run a 489 FE in my Mustang, Erson Solid lifter cam (high 240's @ .050, .595 lift, 110 LSA on a 105 center), Keiths heads with some additional work done afterwards, a heavily worked RPM intake and a 1000 Holley

I love the setup, pulls like a monster, runs great driving easy. Diamond Pistons have a nice tight tolerance and it doesnt burn a lick of oil or make any (unwanted) noise, 3 inch pipes bellow pretty good

I say go for it. I built my own, but I am sure Keith could do the whole package for you too

Default Ask any guy who own's one.

My Kieth Craft 482 is an earth shaking, ear splitting, monster that has been ultra reliable and cool running. Some other Cobra owners that thought their Cobra's were fast are stunned when they get in my Kirkham. It feels like getting shot out of a cannon and makes the most beautiful noise. Nobody know's how to build an aluminum block FE like Kieth and the 482 stroker with Edelbrock heads is his specialty. The results will blow you away (and anybody else that tries to pass you too!).
