Default Neat Show on Speed

I just saw American Muscle Car on Speed - featuring muscle car shoot out - Engines only. They put various engines from the 60's in stock/showroom form (or so they said) on a dyno - and compared hp/tq numbers. They had the 426 hemi, Chevy 409, Pontiac 421, and Ford FE 427. The 409 did 406 HP. The Pontiac did 488 HP. That FE engine did 637 HP! The Hemi did 820 hp! Holy *#@!^ !! Now the Chevy 427 L88 is on. And the number is - 527 HP! The hemi won - but I think the story is for you FE guys - impressive. 637 HP - wow!

I found it interesting how the manufactures rated them all around 425 hp. I guess that was for insurance. I recall on CSX3008, the engine was to be producing about 650hp, just a little higher than advertised

Thanks for the thread link. I did suspect some "embellishment" on the hemi and most of the other participants, although to a lesser extent. The Pontiac guy seemed to be a purist - using original 60's parts, and building to strict original specs. They didn't spend much time discussing the chevy, or ford builds, and even less time on the hemi. If I remember right, they said that they did allow a certain amount of extra cylinder bore, and an improved cam, and a couple of other things. So - none (except maybe the Pontiac) we're bone stock - factory spec builds. But, still bottom line - 820 hp hemi, pump gas, - they we're able to build something that worked (and passed for stock on some level). And kudos to the Ford builder 637hp from his engine - real good. So, if they we're more "creative" could they have approached the 820hp range? Just wondering.
