Lakewood scattershield bolts
Dumb question, but I am stumped...it comes with a bunch of bolts, and instructions that don't specifically say what each bolt is for. With all the bolts in around the outside edge (both bellhousing to block, and bellhousing to plate), I have seven 7/16" x 1 or 1.25" bolts, and two 7/16" x .75" long bolts left over.
I dont have the flywheel, pressure plate, or clutch yet, so would they be something for that maybe? I believe the flywheel has 6 bolts, and I think they have the ridges on the bolt heads.
Anyone know what they're for? Thanks for any ideas, and have a great weekend!
Greg

Convincor- Thanks for the reply, but those are the "instructions" I have, along with two other pages. One of the pages mention "use bolts #------ provided". I again have the scattershield and steel plate mounted, but it does not say anywhere what the nine extra bolts are for. I guess I will just hold on to them to see if they are used when installing the pressure plate, flywheel, etc..
Thanks,
Greg

Greg,
I just did installed mine this weekend on a 427 side oiler.
1) There was another hole for a plug in the backing plate that had to be drilled. Lakewood drilled (2) 3/4" holes near the 15741 in the instructions. However I had a third plug that was above those two holes that I had to drill for.
2) (2) of the 1" bolts near the top (marked "C") where there is some thickened material were not long enough. I need to replace them with 1 1/4" long bolts.
3) I did have some bolts left over - is that the sign of a well done project ?
I used ARP flywheel bolts, I believe (6) 7/16"-20 x 1". Cost about $12 at the local speed shop.
The clutch came with special bolts that had a shoulder on them.
Finally, the Lakewood Offset dowels were a major pain but I had to use them to get the alignment within the desired amount. The instructions said "remove old dowels". Hahhh - that is a 2 or 3 hour step.
I hope this helps.
Regards,
Darrell

LOL...Thats what i've always heard anyway! Thanks for the reply. I assumed the smaller bolts were for the starter- as it said they were included, but they are too big. I guess I just have a few extra bolts to use for something else.
As for the dowels, I hope I don't have to mess with them, but we'll see I guess.
Thanks,
Greg

Definitely make sure on the bell housing alignment to get it right. Not worth the hassles it will cause later.

I agree about the alignment. To get the old dowels out, I tapped a 1/4" threads into the dowel (I only put in 5 or 6 threads with care to stay far away from the block). I placed a bushing with the biggest wall thickenss I could find over the dowel. Then I put a nut on 1/4" bolt and threaded it into the dowel. The nut ended up on top of the bushing. Then with two wrenches, I turned the nut and held the bolt head and the dowel pulled out.
There are probably other better ways, but that is how I did it.
