Novice Cam and lifter ?'s

I'm trying to get a better understanding of hydraulic versus mechanical cam and lifters...can some one shed some light on the subject for me please?

Can I install either type in a 428 FE C6ME-A?

I assume the hydraulic is more expensive then the mechanical type?

Also, I need to decide which cam to install in my 428 FE engine. It's strictly going to be a street application.

The engine will be going in an ERA 427 Street car, single carb, dual rear exiting exhaust.

The hyd cams are much more streetable and need little maintenence. Solid lifter cams need regular adjustment and performance can vary with changes in ambient air temp and barametric pressure. If your FE originally had a hyd cam, it would be wise to stay with a hyd model because the oil passages are already there. I chose a Comp Cams 270H model for my 428, which is somewhat conservative, but you can choose from several different manufacturers and grinds. Consult your engine builder as to the type of driving you will do with your Cobra. Good luck.

You can use a solid lifter cam in you engine by using shell type lifters available at DSC for around $85 a set. That's what I use in my FE (Fairlane). I have a 282S Comp Cam. The shell type somewhat seal off the oil passages and keep them from flooding the lifter bores with oil. A nice alternative to plugging up the block to run barbell type solid lifters.
