Default MSD Coil Location

I am thinking of mounting my MSD coil "blaster" on the shock tower. Has anyone done this ? I would use the MSD spark plug wires. I know cloer is better but I can't find a nice bracket to mount on the heads and don't want to build new right now.

Thanks,
Darrell

You don't have to run it close to the motor, you can run it anywhere you like. Many production cars have their coils on the fender wells with a long wire to the cap. Heck, MSD even makes a firewall bulkhead for people who want to run their coil not even in their engine bay.

I have mine mounted to the inside left fender. The coil wire is about the same length as the #4 spark plug wire.

Thanks for the info. It just seems like I heard that it needs to be close, but after talking to MSD and hearing from you I am convinced.

Smile Coils

If it is an oil filled coil, mount it vertical. Accel has an oil filled coil that burns up if mounted on it's side. They claim that the air bubble inside the coil is the problem, but they do not explain that in their instructions. I guess they like to sell a "lot" of coils.

Default Mount it on the Motor

The car had the coil mounted on the driver's side fender which was nice until the big block came to life one day and broke an engine mount. The 18 in coil wire pulled out of the coil and burnt the boot on the wire. New engine mounts and all new ignition parts solved that problem. I went thru the same questions on this forum and finally purchased an high vibration coil from MSD and mounted it on the engine. I wraped the coil with electical tape to give the mounting bracket a better grip. No prblems 5000+ miles

I was concered about motor mounts breaking. When I took out my motor the old ones were starting to seperate. When I installed the new ones, I drilled two holes in each motor mount and put two 5/16" grade 8 bolts with oversized washers on them. I left them slightly loose then siliconed them so they wouldn't vibrate.

Default COil bracket

I bought one from Summit, link below, for $7.88 and mounted it to the back of the oil filter bracket. This keeps it short and away from the heat of the motor.

Here is the picture in my gallery of 1 photo for now.
