Default Alternator clearance with original 427 block

As everyone can tell my project is to the point where I am rapidly trying to put the final pieces on so I can hear it run for the first time, so I really appreciate everyone's help!

I have two alternators for my 427 side oiler (it is an original block). One is a GM style and one is Ford. They are 100amp polished alternators. I figured out the wiring and I thought I was done.

I can not get either alternator to fit. I have a polished bracket for a FE that I bought from George at Gessfords. I am trying to mount on the lower-passenger side. The problem is that the windings on the back of the alternator prevent it from rotating close enough to the water pump to allow me to use the skinny slotted bracket. The windings are hitting the block. I have looked at many of your pictures and seems like many of you are you using a similiar bracket on a similiar engine.

Was there any tips/advice ? Keith put the engine togethor for me and I don't recall what type of water pump it is but the bigger bracket fit fine on the water pump and I do not think that is the problem.

I just looked at Gessfords Website and they are showing the alternator on the UPPER passenger side. You might look at that. Good luck, Jim

Remember you also need a spacer on the pivot point bolt. It should mount on the upper side.

You could also try and find a Ford FE alternator bracket that was used with engines that had a smog pump over the alternator. It mounts the alternator lower and there might be more room that way. Part Nos. are C8AE 10156A and C8AE 10145B, there are other part nos. as well but those will get you going.

These brackets can be hard to find but I got mine off an ebay auction looking for "Ford FE low mount alternator bracket". Paid $30.

Another option is this one:

Go down to the 3rd and 4th items for the Alt. brackets. Their a little pricey but very nice looking.

Good Luck.

Paul

Morgan,

Your engine looks incredible! If I may ask, where did you get that elbow for the top radiator hose? I have switched my expansion tank to the driver side like yours and would like something other than a black rubber hose. Those clamps look cool too.

Thanks.

Paul

Thanks for everyone's reply's. Turns out - it was relatively simple. My spacer was a Ford and Alternator was a GM so it was wrong. I knew that going in, but when I got the right spacer and lined up the pulleys it worked.

Thanks,

Paul,
I got the stainless steel hose clamps and hose from a local supplier called California Industrial Rubber. Clamp size 59-63. around 6.00 each (559) 268-7321

The top and bottom radiator pipe came from Shelby
