427 aluminum engines in the 60's?

Someone asked me that question at a car show yesterday. I told him I thought aluminum blocks were not used in the 427's for the 427 S/C cars. Help with this info please.

You are correct...they were iron blocks.

There were "XE" experimental aluminum blocks in the sixties.
Just as there were experimental aluminum heads.

They didn't work out. End of story for 20 or 30 years.

The only 427 alum block in the 60's was a Chevy. The ZL1 which was put in a total of 69 1969 Camaros and only a couple of Vettes (big dollar cars today). -Heck of a strong engine though (even if it was a Cheby).

On a related note, the Fliptop Cobra CSX2196 had a race/experimental version aluminum FE 390 in it, originally. The current owner has since replaced it with a 427, and in such a light weight car it just hauls a$$, approaching scary fast territory.
